I found this tank at my local shop. Took a chance on it and, hopefully, can help out a fellow member and make a few bucks to fund my CB500/550 projects.

First couple of pics are "as found", then after I cleaned it up. Nice, solid, original paint tank. Some very light scuffs from shelf wear and being 40+ years old. Small, shallow dent on the RH side, right on the decal. The pic in the sun shows it best but makes it appear worse than it really is, IMO.
Small knick near the gas cap and two small knicks near the chrome trim. Gas cap has rust "zits" and needs a sealing ring. No key, but any key will work (already tried it with my CB500 key and a random key on my keychain). No petcock.
Paint is flaking off emblems, but they're nice and straight and could be restored.
Inside is very clean. A little bit of varnish in one spot and some very light flash rust in a couple of places. I've saved MUCH worse tanks that this using the toilet bowl cleaner method, but you could probably get by with just flushing it with gas and running a filter for the first few miles.

Unfortunately, shipping to Canada has been VERY cost prohibitive, but if you're willing to foot the billl....
I prefer to sell in the Continental 48, though.
$200 OBO, plus the trip.

Actually, that tank is not 40+ years old. It is actually about 35 years old. Saying that because one it is not a wrinkle tank. If it was a CB750 sandcast tank 1969-70 there would be wrinkles on the bottom of the tank. Also the locking cap tells me that this is not a sandcast tank. The locking tank was introduced from 1973-4. What you have is a 1975-77 CB750 tank. If it is clean on the inside $200 is a fair price.

Actually it is a 69 or 70 tank. Not all 69s were sandcast. Less than 7000. It can also be used as a 71 or 72 tank but there is a little difference in the stripe colors. In 73 Honda went to a completely different graphic design. Here is a link to help clarify. You should get 200 and probably more on Ebay.

I never claimed it was a wrinkle tank. If it was, it would be worth way more than my asking price. I was told it's a '70 or '71 tank, going by the color and decals. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm a CB500/550 guy.

Oh, and if it's even a '72, it IS 40 years old. The locking cap was a dealer retro-fit on many bikes, after there was some concern about the cap flipping open in a wreck. My '71 CB500 has one.

The locking cap was actually a recall by Honda. I have two 1972 hondas that do not have that locking cap. If your tank is really a 71 or a 72 there would still be wrinkles. A wrinkle tank was in use in 1971. Trust me the tank is from 1974-5, I can tell by the bottom. With SOHC 750 tanks the key to getting any sort of ID is always the bottom. From 1969 to 1971 there will be 5 to 6 wrinkles on the bottom, (doing this from memory), from 1972-3 there would be wrinkles but 2 or 3. By the mid 70's as Honda's technology got better with their metal stamping, the wrinkles disappeared.

Candy Gold with the stripe wasn't offered in '74-75. It's a '69-72 color. This tank has not been repainted. Look at the Spooky Tom's link in the previous reply.

When a tank is referred to as a wrinkle tank it has wrinkles in the bottom of the tank that can be seen through the fill hole.



They were used on 69 and early 70 bikes. The sandcast bikes and some of the diecast bikes. I had an early diecast bike that shared a lot of parts with the sandcast bikes. It had a wrinkle tank.

All of the pre-76 750 tanks had wrinkles in the bottom but in the area further down the tank as seen in your picture above.

I agree this is a 70-72 tank.
