Hi there im new to the forum and need some advice on a MT50

I restored one for my sons 16th birthday in August last year, he has been using it daily and we have kept it well maintained, The bike is the later SL model (1992) with the combined regulator rectifier it has been running like clock work for 6 months, but we have a problem occured with the lights that i just cant work out, initially the front headlight bulb blew, so i replaced it ...... but since then ........ every time you start the bike up the headlight bulb shines normal and bright, and the battery goes from 6.1 at rest up to about 6.6v, but after a minute or so the headlamp dims, and the charging drops down and holds steady at to 6.2. The bulb doesnt blow, just dims, and when i put a multimeter on the wires going into the bulbholder it drops down to 0V.

I have checked the coils in the generator and all are up to hondas recommendations for resistance (i have also fitted a spare generator i have and the same happens) I have purchased a new battery and regulator rectifier from David silver and on start up the charging was good steadily rising from 6.5 up to the high 7's and the headlight bright, but then the headlight dimmed again and the battery charging went into reverse. I then noticed that the red wire going into the reg / rec was broken at the terminal, so replaced the terminal .... started up ... same again ... all bright for about 1 minute and charging fine .... then zero volts at bulb, everything goes dim and battery reverses charging.

I have put a multimeter into the yellow (lighting wire) block at the reg / rec and again when the power drops after about a minute there is zero volts there. So i am totally confused ... could i have bought a dodgy replacement regulator rectifier ?? could the fact that the red wire coming out of the reg / rec that had virtually corroded away that i had to fix has blown the replacement reg / rectifier ?? i have also replaced the switchgear harness from the main harness to the switches to the lights .... i'm totally confused, when the light drops its power, it still glows but very dimly. and if i turn the bike off leave it for 5 minutes all is fine .... until about a minute of running when it goes dim again!!

Totally confused ?? there are 4 wires in the reg / rec ... one yellow (lighting) from the generator one white (charging) from the generator, one red (+)and one green (-)

Am i missing something obvious out as all i can think is that i bought another dodgy reg / rec. .. its all running well for about a minute, then its like a switch is flicked and the headlight dims and the battery stops charging ... any help totally appreciated

Many thanks
