I have come across several used petcocks that have had the feed tubes cut off flush to the top of the body. Why is this done?

Secondly, I thought that I had seen on this forum a thread about the use of inline fuel filters and the pros and cons of this practice. Anyone know of this?

I doubt they were cut off. They usually just break off due to corrosion.

Inline fuel filters are unnecessary. They don't really trap anything finer than the screen in the petcock, and they can restrict fuel flow. Just get a new petcock screen and O ring, and forget the external filters. Remove and clean the screen once in a while.
