Took old faithful to the shop to get top end gaskets replaced. Picked it up and took it back today. Will shift great between 1st and Neutral, but cannot toe shift into 2nd and higher gears. Can upshift to those gears by grabbing the shifter and applying way more pressure than I have ever dreamed of, but not possible to upshift with foot.

Would appreciate any and all hints...

Did it shift Ok before it went to the shop? Did they do anything else besides the head gasket?

Sounds almost as though the shifter linkage is either damaged or not centered. Some shift linkages have an eccentric screw that the linkage spring rides on and it may need adjustment if it won't shift one way or the other. Cool

That shifter doesn't have an eccentric but rather a rod for the adjustment. If the adjustment rod is to far out off center shifting will be as you describe, try adjusting it a little at a time.

Good thought, I've seen the little lever that slides onto the shift shaft installed incorrectly and the rod adjusted wrong. It caused a similar problem.

Shifted great when I took it in for the top end work. Think it is the linkage now based on my gut plus other suggestions. Thanks everyone...
