Hi,
I am looking at an 82 Maxim 750. 13K. I don't have a lot of knowledge about Yamahas, but I did have a 250 enduro. Anyway, does anyone here have or had one? What do you think of them? What are the good/bad points? The guy bought it new so he would know all the little quirks. What would be a fair price for one of these? Thanks.

I have had (6) 1982 Yamaha Maxim motorcycles. They are awesome! Shaft drive, in line 4 cylinder, YCIS motor, comfortable. Make sure the carbs are cleaned. Syncronizing the carbs requires a special YCIS tool that goes into the cylinders and blocks off the YCIS ports. If they are running right, these are very good, dependable machines. Oh, the fuse box sucks and you must change out the bayonet metal fuse holders with a different style. Completely swith fuse holders to something different and you will not have any others problems. I had a four into one pipe on mine and it screams. Value of course depends on condition when you buy old vintage so here is a good range. Any good running, good looking bike can command between $1200 - $1500 any day of the week. Even $1800 if it is perfect. $600 if the bike is not running and needs work. You asked the right guy. More questions?? Just ask.

SIX!!! You must be able to work on these in your sleep!! Besides the fuse thing are there any other weak points? The owner says the carbs were cleaned and synced recently. No leaks. Today I visited my local Yamaha shop and he said parts are still widely available from Yamaha. That was a big concern for me. But while I was there I drooled all over a new V-Star 650. I just can't get myself to part with 6K for a new bike. I don't know how those Harley guys do it.

there is another site that deals expressly with XJs...

you can pm me for the site (i dont know if its kosher to post a link to another site here) but they can help you deal with all of youre XJ questions...

on the brake bleeding issue, you may need to rebuild the caliper or the master cylinder. i have a good source for XJ specific kits...

I am assuming that the engine cases on your maxim are the same as the XJ900 I had for many years. Locate all plugs that drain oil from the cases so that when you do an oil change you change out as much as reasonably possible. There are at least 2 plugs, may even be 3. Some-one else will confirm that.
