Just picked up a 1976 kz 1000. It needs a complete going through, it's been sitting around in a garage for most of it's life only 9000 miles on it. The PO (the original owner) said it was a special bike for the bicentenial, the bike is in real nice shape. When I look up parts there aren't any listings for a 76 1000. I found two bikes that are listed as 76 kz1000's online, I assume that if I order parts for a 77 I should be ok I hope
I Guess I am hoping that someone can tell me more about the bike and if I am correct about ordering parts thanks. photos to come this weekend

This sounds like a case where the bike was titled in the year it was sold, not the model year. Is the build date on the ID plate 1976?

9k is just getting broken in!

I can tell you a few things about the KZ1000. Their master cylinders are pretty generic and will fit all years and will also fit the KZ750LTD. The airboxes are special to the bike. Not sure about them doing a special bicennential bike tho. I am curious about this and it means time to go talk to my old friend who was a Kawi mechanic then.

thanks for the quick replies I am bringing it home sat. and i can check out more then. but, the po said that minnesota dealers got of 30 bikes for 1976 and only 300 were made in total and they had to be ordered a year prior according to the po and she was the original owner. she had a windjammer and a luggage rack installed on it. there is supposed to be some kind of card with the title that explains it . she is in the process of moving and the title was at her new place that is why I have to wait til sat. Can't wait to get it on my jack in the garage!

Post pictures when you get it. BITD I had a 1978 KZ1000 that I converted to an LTD with mags and seat. I have a picture of it and my current ride posted in my gallery. Seems I recall a "Centennial" edition but I am getting old.

I have tried to send pix of my yamaha xs750sf but i don't know how to resize them to 16 kb .I am not good w/computers I have tried, and I really want to post pix of my xs750sf and kz1000 maybe someone could walk me through it. I lost all my resto pix of the xs750sf due to a virus in my computer, no back up, i guess i'm sure it is not complicated, like usual show me once and i got it. Happy turkey day to all. watching foot ball now for the rest of the day. I am a Vikings fan and they finally did the right thing - see ya Childress -my apologies I know this is a motorcycle forum- SeeYa

well I got the bike home and the po still can't find the title, she is still looking through boxes, the vin is kztoob-503544 build date is 4-77 and the motor is kztooae 03 1977. so I imagine that shoots the story about it being some bicentennial bike. can any one steer me to a vin decoder that takes less than 17 digits or help me decode it. It looks just like a black 77 w/red stripes that i saw on google images. I still want to restore the bike, but I really don't want to go through the bonding process at the state. I may have no choice. thanks for any advice in advance

I am sure it is a 1977. Bi-Centenial??? Oh did they have a special event in 1776 over in Japan. Come on man! First year for the 1000cc bike. Cool. I have a 1975 Z-1 900 and several 76 KZ900's.

It sounds like you have a '77 KZ1000B. That's an LTD model built at the Lincoln, Nebraska plant. They were factory custom cruisers with cast wheels, stepped seat, and Jardine exhaust, but not any Bi-Centennial bike. First year for that style was the '76 KZ900 LTD. The bike is more valuable than the standard KZ1000A from that same year. It does have a lot of parts that are unique to the LTD model, so don't order anything that only fits the KZ1000A.

dont hold your breath on that title.... in my experience, unless you LEAVE the sellers house with the bike in the back of the truck and the title in your hand, you can kiss the idea of getting the title later.
now the good news, if she cant FIND the title, just have her get a dup (offer to pay) from the state since she was the registered owner, its easy.
whats NOT easy is keeping on her to actually get it.

I do have the bike in my garage. still no title. but I still haven't paid for it yet -so she has plenty of incentive to look. My real problem is keeping my hands off of it till this is settled. I want to dismantle the entire bike and rebuild it new again. I will just play the game dealt me and see what happens. I have another parts bike(a 79 yamaha 750 special needs a jug set and piston, nearly all there) same problem no title. maybe I'll do both at the same time

For that 79 yamaha 750 special, you could do a bonded title. Thats what I'm having to do with my 1972 XL250 restoration.

Two issues here. First, you don't want to sink any time or money into it before it actually belongs to you. That leads to the second issue - the longer this goes on, the greater the chance that the bike will never belong to you. She may run into someone who offers her more for the bike, and you'll lose it. It's a fairly desirable model. I'm surprised she let you remove the bike from her property before you'd paid her for it.

I'm also pretty sure her whole cockamamie story is BS. Few women were buying bikes back then, and even fewer bought the fastest and most powerful bike available. And folks who paid a premium for these customs usually didn't cover 'em up with fairings, though a 2nd or 3rd owner might have. I was a service manager at a Kaw shop when the '76 900 LTD came out, and I don't remember any pre-order program for the bikes. We got 'em in, we sold 'em. End of story. Same for the '77 and later models. Plus, you'd think an origiunal owner would know what year model the bike is. '77 production started well before December 1976 - probably as early as 7/76. If she'd bought it then, I suppose it could have gotten titled as a '76. But she couldn't have bought it or titled it in '76 if it wasn't made till 4/77. The frames were tagged at the time they were manufactured, but they may not have been used in actual bike assembly for several weeks. Then there's shipping time involved. So my hunch is the original dealership sold this bike in June, '77 or later.
