Ran fine before I tore it apart. Now, Great spark on left, none on right. Have tried 4 different plugs including the great left one. Have checked points and timing several times. Have 12v with the key on at BOTH plug caps. Permatex hex? What am I missing? Doug

Just checked and I even have 12v at the plug end BUT, it's when the points are open?? Seems bassakwards???

Partially solved and have isolated the problem I think. The plug wire was broken in the middle I could tell after closer exam it was not stiff in one spot. Cut the wire and spliced that and had both sides going for awhile. Put the tank back on and it quit. It is also loose where the wire enters the coil and now fear it is broken inside. That part's sealed and don't know if it's fixable???

I have been keeping up on the excellent advice you are getting on another site now that you thought the spark plug wire was broken in one spot. It is good you are learning how to check coils by measuring resistance...but maybe after the damage was done? I am going to 'go out on a limb' and say I don't think the problem was ever the coil or it's wire in the first place. I am not saying that the wire should not be repaired or replaced anyway as preventive maintenance with a NGK splice kit or the coil repair possibility being discussed.... but you assumed the wire was broken because of a 'soft' spot midway on the wire. You cut it and 'spliced it'. Then you got it to run on both cylinders until you put the gas tank back on....same problem. Intermittent problem? Is it possible that you are grounding out or partially grounding out the coil from a wire being pinched to ground somewhere around the coil mount/gas tank area or more likely, a wire pinched between the coil mount and frame? That's it....I don't want to confuse the issue any farther. Just something to think about if you wind up needing another option to look at. Good luck.

Edit: Always.....for any type of troubleshooting.....Fully charged and known good battery. Charge..let it sit one hour...check again.
