So, this past fathers day, my kids bought me a basketcase XS360. My first question is: how bike specific are ignition coils? The Yamaha OEM coil is between $75 and $125 USD each, but any other coil I've seen is $20-$45 USD. Will one of the cheaper ones work as well?

Also, for a kick-start only bike, how important is a battery? I'd have to assume it's kinda redundant, since there's no electronic ignition.

If there's anyone in the Mid-Michigan area that's interested in helping a newbie with this project, gimme a holler...

[b][i]I might have some coils that will work on your bike. Just send me any numbers off your coils and I will check what I have.
Also have a brand new Clymer Repair Manual for the '76-'78 XS360/400 if needed.
PM or email if interested.

I also have a xs360 but mine is a 76. In my opinion you will want to use the electric starter on this bike. I have a lot better luck starting mine with the starter then with the kicker. I bought a brand new battery for mine at walmart for less then $30 last summer. I also got a repair manual if you need a copy of any of it.

I've also got a 1977 XS360d. There were two models, one with electric start and the economy model with kick start only. You still need a battery even with the kick starter. You can use aftermarket coils and there are plenty of online sources to get them if bobbyjim doesn't have what you need. I have some extra parts. What else might you need? Just shoot me an email.

Dave

Thanks for all the input already, guys. I'll check my numbers later this week when I get some free time, and shovel out the garage... not sure what else I'll need yet, just getting into the thing. I'm considering doing a full rebuild, but I'm kinda new to engines. I have the repair manual (bought it last spring). I'll let you know if I need anything else.

Hey, everyone, This little project of mine got sidelined by life for a while. I'm going to try to get back into it over the winter (gonna try move it into my basement for a while without the wife blowing a fuse). As I make progress, I'll probably be looking for some advice/ parts. Wish me luck...
