|
|
Only happens when I log in. Only thing different recently is that I downloaded Firefox 3.6 browser. I downloaded a Refresher Blocker but message said it was incompatible with Firefox 3.6. So far this only happens on this web page. Log in to email account,etc....no problems. The upper left hand tab showing what site keeps flashing "Loading' and of course the download bars are showing the loading over and over. The page does not 'refresh' each time....I don't think...I will watch closer. I am going to log out as soon as and if I post a topic or a reply. As mentioned earlier, I am on expensive broad band right now ( that is also a recent change from the norm) so I am going to assume this problem is eating away at my semi-limited download limit. Any body else having a problem like this? I may go back to Internet Explorer and see if that helps....until I do....any ideas? _________________ _________________________________

It's your browser. You have some sort of a pop up blocker thing going on that is fighting with the Instant messaging system.
Cheers,

Thanks Dave,
I messed with the pop-up blocker settings and also the instant messaging. I noticed that when I would hit the 'offline' button on the IM the reloading would stop but as soon as I refreshed the page or moved on to another page the freight train reloading would start again! I have switched back to Internet Explorer as my default browser, with no problem on reloading, until I wake up (it's early) and can give it some more thought.....too bad, I was just starting to get use to Firefox.......Thanks again. _________________ _________________________________

I use Firefox too and have the same problem.
This is the only site it happens on.

For what its worth, I made this problem go away by clicking 'offline' at the bottom of the instant messaging box.
Doesn't last forever but its a one click fix when the problem re occurs (every time you re load the page )
IE seems immune.

Yes, I had mentioned above that it would stop if I hit offline on IM. Then start again when I would change pages or hit 'refresh'. I thought it did not do it on IE ...but look closer...at the bottom left downloading bar when on IE is set as default browser...at least on mine it is doing the same thing on IE...just not as obvious. I am not sure if this is normal or not at this location (bottom left) _________________ _________________________________

Don’t be so quick to thank me. The “fix” was to remove instant messaging from the site which was easily one of the most powerful tools we had available. The reason other sites didn’t do it is because other sites can’t do it.

I knew I didn't like the sound of " I 'fixed' the 'problem'" It was just a small inconvenience/annoyance for me and I am use to small inconveniences. So this was happening to everyone? At any-rate if Instant Messaging is used a lot everyday by a lot of people, as far as I am concerned you can put it back like it was. I will just continue to log out shortly after posting topic or replies. However, I, of course cannot speak for the others who were having the problem. Thanks for letting us know the situation. _________________ _________________________________

I was semi kidding about the fixed the problem thing. That was a line from the movie office space. Hilarious movie.
Those IM's have always been sort of a mixed bag. It doesn’t really reload the whole page. What’s going on is the IM box is reloading and checking who is currently online and trying to deliver messages since it has no other way to determine if someone is still on the site or drifted off but just didn’t log out.
I did at one point switch to a different one that didn’t pulse like that due to the hosting company bitching because it hits the server resources pretty hard. (Which is one reasons we are on our own dedicated server now.) But the problem was you couldn’t hold an intelligent conversation with anyone because it relied on people refreshing it by moving around the site which doesn’t happen much if someone is reading posts or composing a message so that was a complete flop.
This is the only one I have been able to find that "Just Works" and doesn’t require someone to do something special like logging in to instant messaging like you would a chat room (which nobody would do). even at that I had to roll my own using code from both Russia, Brazil and a few other sources. (Seriously) That’s why I said other sites "cant" do it because it only exists on VJMOG and CBX World.
In its defense it’s awesome for communicating real time with other members which is one area that the forums tend to fall short. It’s as simple as clicking on someone’s name and firing away which is great because the message will come up in their face and only has 2 buttons so even the most computer illiterate people can figure out how to reply. I find it handy for those. Can I call you? Turn on your Skype or just plain BSing about things with friends on stuff that is probably not forum post worthy.
To be honest I’m not exactly sure how many people on VJMOG actually use it. But I know on CBX World it’s heavily used but that is more of an International site so we talk across the pond a lot.
It’s really totally up to you folks if you want it around. I'm sort of neutral on it.
Cheers,

Instant messaging would be a nice luxury but not a necessity. We just use PM's and get back with each other that way. Yes, IM would be nice because you can elaborate a bit more and type what you are thinking at the moment. But...at the expense of hardware, software, memory capacity it would not disrupt the site without it. Not many used it. I tried to get people in the chat room but nobody wanted to go in there with me. I think they thought I might molest them. At least that is the feeling I got. Anyway, my 2 cents. _________________ You only go around once in life, but if you do it right, once is enough! |

At least that is the feeling I got. | Hey....I went in there with you and 'chatted' as did a couple of other people that day (I think ol55 and Bikegeezer went in separately but they went in after we had left or something. It WAS kind of weird and dark in there. Also remember that some may be intimidated by their typing skills/speed and may be concerned they could not keep up with you. Although I took typing in high school (we really liked to roll around on those chairs ) and a little in college and was pretty darn fast....after twenty five years of very little typing I imagine I am not as fast as a lot of people but a lot faster than some. You all look over at the chat room every so often an make sure Steve is not sitting in there by himself. _________________ _________________________________
