Welcome to the VJMOG! The greatest website for Vintage Japanese Motorcycles. We are now going global and have a few members from Australia. blackstock, you are as nuts as the rest of us. That bike is really, really messed up and most would take it to the scrap yard and collect money for scrap value. I have never brought one back from that far gone. I always say, "If they have a pulse, I can bring them back to life." That GT250 has been dead for years. I am not Jesus and cannot bring things back to life when dead. Good Luck. Post pictures which is easy, just resize to 800 x 600, save them in your computer that size and then attach to the post. You will scare the baby wallabees away when you fire up that two stroke! _________________ You only go around once in life, but if you do it right, once is enough!

Blackstock, welcome, looks to me like a real project, but a piece at a time will result in its transformation back to the living. As far as the scrapyard goes, Steve would only want to know which one you took it to, We are all nuts, fixing up these critters, but it's ultimately fun and great when people comment, "it's how old?" Best of luck mate...............Blue _________________ A pirates treasure and a life of lesure, don't make much for trajedy, but it's a poor man my friend, who's living in his own skin, and can't stand the company. Welcome to vjmog. Your bike looks like a real project, but will surely give you much satisfaction. Whenever I start thinking one of my projects might be a little too much, I re-read a thread over on the SOHC/4 forum about a guy from Holland that saves a Honda from the dumpster, and then mine dosen't seem so overwelming. Good luck, and keep us posted.

You will find lots of good information here at VJMOG. Lots of people that really know the old bikes. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like you don't have a lot of rust to deal with. Lots of elbow grease and patience will pay off. I'm learning how to get pictures posted here too. I've got a project that I'm making slow progress on and I need to post some pictures. _________________ Flyboy

Gareth I know when I get something new to mess with, that's all I can think of. Do you have the back wheel and what shape is the engine in. Or, are you just staring at it, like I do, trying to envision the end result, It's getting to the warm weather down there, is it not? Anyhow, just curious........Blue _________________ A pirates treasure and a life of lesure, don't make much for trajedy, but it's a poor man my friend, who's living in his own skin, and can't stand the company. Thanks for the helpful replies!
once i got it home i had a good look over the bike. the engine had it's head and cylinders removed, hence the engine has filled up with crud, but the gear box still moves happily! the seat is none origonal too.
Last night i dismantled everything back to the frame, which has very little rust, and carefully examined all the parts for repair or replace. Luckily with this bike, all the hard parts to find are already on it, so far....
I will keep you posted, should be a laugh!

Holy crap! I would recommend really checking the crank bearings and definetly replacing the crank seals. Don't want to be into it and then find that those are bad. And by the looks of that engine, my guess is 78.3% sure the crank seals are bad. Middle crank seal, middle crank bearing are your biggest obstacles. Hope not or that could be a crank take apart with a press and crank work to press back together. Better off just buying a good crank on ebay. We are getting way ahead of ourselves here but..... just sayin' _________________ You only go around once in life, but if you do it right, once is enough!

Well, It sounds like you are a good sport, so I will tell you, I am past laughing....a little concerned. You would not like to buy a nice one for around $800.00 AUD? Saw one in an Australian ad at that price. Your motor might cost half that price to rebuild. Might find one on ebay for around $100...but that would be quite a gamble also. _________________ _________________________________

Good luck with it, could be a big job. If you want a trade, I have an 86 RZ250R complete but less motor, pipes and carbs. It's a bit rough but would be an easier project than the X7.

a trade? After all I have read on her, I am too curious now.... I owned a gt380 years ago, I thought that was too bulky and heavy, so the gt250 should be a treat!
having stripped everything, I discovered the frame is in great condition, and have started sanding for a repaint. The petrol tank has been earlier repaired with bad welding and sports some new holes, I will re-weld, and use filler to contour the tank up to the same height as the seam. Am still waiting on an engine i bought from sydney, bloody frieght companies!....
One thing I am really impressed about, the cheapness of parts!?
