hey folks. I've got a 69 Honda CT90. I was learning to ride it (I'm new the this whole motorcycle thing) and managed to burn out the clutch a bit. I know it's slipping and needs replacing, but here's the deal. When I've got in on it's center stand, I can shift it what seems like 1-4, and definitely 1-3. But when I'm riding it I can't get it to go past 2nd. I learned real quick to let off the throttle before shifting, so I don't think it's that. Is it my weight on the bike and the other forces involved while I'm riding it that's preventing it from shifting properly and causing the clutch to slip more? I'm replacing the the clutch tomorrow or the next day, but I'd like to make sure that that's what it is, and not anything else. Any insight?

I am working on my first bike but will throw an idea out. If that is a wet clutch lubed by the engine oil you might need an oil change. You might try this link http://hondatrailcts.yuku.com/bhondatrailcts Hope this helps and welcome to vjmog.

Yeah That might have been it. I dunno. I changed the friction plates and the oil, along with the points (not that that would affect the shifting...) and it's all better now. 40 year old oil would make things a little weird though.
