Does anyone know how to get the VIN number off of a frame? I've got an old frame that was given to me and I want to do a VIN search to get a title, but the number is 3 digits short.

It's supposedly from a Honda.

Thanks,

most of the 70's and back bikes dont have enough digets in the vin for todays standards..
if im not mistaken in the 80's the # of digits in the vin was increased to 12 or so..
just take a tracing or photo of the vin ..your dot or state police should be aware of the fact..

Yeah, I ran into a similar problem with my 1948 Willys Jeep that I drive, it only had a 5 digit vin, but they finaly figured it out. Now the vin is 0000000XXXXX, only way they could find to stuff it down the DMVs computers throat, I then went to get the ins. certificate and the insurance co. didn't bat an eye.....Blue

i had the same bs..my buddy is a state cop so i had the auto theft boys run the #'s..
they came up no records found..they told me of the vin digit changes..
usually these old bikes we like have been off the road so many years they are wiped off the dmv records
after 6 or 8 yrs of lapse of licence records (most states purge there data base every so many years )

Thanks. I will have the numbers run at the records for theft too. I know that there is a process in salvage title to road worthy (regular title), but I understand it to be cumbersome and expensive.

VINs are 17 digit now, my 66 M-50 has a 7 digit, just depends on who you get at the DMV how much hassle you get (how much they know)
