Bought the bike on impulse not running but looked to be in reasonable state . I have cleaned carbs , brakes , new plugs , air cleaner foam , new battery . Got bike running the other night . runs well on one side but blows oil out other exhaust . Did compression test showing 100 psi on both sides . ANY suggestions ? My first post so thanks in advance . Question

Welcome aboard, Kiwi.

Stuart, eh? We used to live just down the road in Jupiter. Moved to Orlando a few years back.

Anyway, since your GT185 is a 2-stroke, it's expected to smoke a little out of both pipes. However, if one is really worse than the other, the auto-lube might be putting too much oil in one side over the other (seems unlikely, though). Or, a crank seal may be bad and it's pulling in oil from the transmission / clutch cavity. Or, if it has been sitting for a while, injector oil could have leaked into and puddled in one crankcase cavity, and it's just taking a while to burn itself off.

Which side is smoking?

Anyway, welcome aboard! Post some pix of your new steed, if you get the chance.

Kirk

alot of times when these bikes sit for 5,10,15 yrs the cases can load up w oil gas etc..
dont be suprised if it doesnt take a nice 10 or 15 mi ride to clear the crank cases..
+1 on the crank seals too..keep an eye on your tranny oil to see if it disappears which would indicate a bad crank seal

Here is a parts site that I use as a reference sometimes...if you don't already have it......they use Suzuki part #'s.

Not sure about that compresson reading...I mean I really don't know what it should be. Had seen this ....just while googling.....don't know how reliable it may be...but maybe someone here can add to it. This guy said he did a compression check[cold] and got 120 and 116..... Idunno

On my 1975 GT-185, cold compression numbers are 120 and 125.

on a two stroke any where from about 90 to 120psi is good compression. just look at it this way. you let your weedeater sit in the shed over the winter and then summer hits and you need to use it. the first few times you use it that summer is smokes for the first 10 15 min it is running. another thing is that older two strokers tend to burn a lil more oil. but at the same time i agree about the seals. make sure you keep a good eye on the tras fluid level. i live in gainesville. when you get it going hit me up for a ride.
