I picked up a 1979 kz 750 twin that I want to make into a bobber. I have a little problem with it running, though. It won't. I have power going into the coil but nothing coming out. I picked up another coil at the salvage yard, they tested it, said it was good. I got home...same problem. Could it simply be another bad coil, or could there be another problem somewhere else??
Thanks!!

Sorry about any confusion!! Wink

Just click on the "edit" button on the post above, and you can fix the title...

Well, coils *can* go bad, but it's ulikely that both are bad... although possible...

You have to make sure all the wiring is intact, notably the grounds...

Also, could you explain how you are testing it that makes you think it's dead? Do you know the "secret" that Kaws have coil power via the "run" switch (therefore it must be on, unlike Hondas)?

Let me know...

Sorry about the bad news but... electrical problems are the most difficult to diagnose. I looked up this model and it seems to be a hybrid. In other words, it has contact breaker points but it has a voltage regulator and a rectifier for electronic ignition. Man! Now we have numerous components that could be bad and no good way to check them. Make sure the points are opening about .014" and all connections are good. Good battery. Then you have to start replacing critical components with known good ones. Not an easy or inexpensive task. Owners then have to decide if the machine is worth the expense. Tough call, I have had to tell hundreds of owners this bad news.
