First of all, I have a 1971 TS250R suzuki. I'm in need of a speedometer. I have searched e-bay, craigs list, junkyards, etc. without any luck. I have found speedometers for other size suzukis of the same year model that look and measure the same on the outside but the MPH dial (face) is different and what i'd like to know if one of these would work on my bike or is the gearing or something inside the speedometer different.

The speedometer on my 1971 TS250R is off of a 73' TS 250 and it works fine and looks decent too, its a little different however it does not have the chrome band around the bottom of the speedo.

First, if you have a correct speedo that needs repair you can try "Foreign speedo" in San Diego, CA. I used them to good effect.

Second, get a "Zedder" program (PC only, unfortunately) that cross references what other bikes use the same part and also lists substitutions. You can also contact a dealer to see the parts number history. I've seen Suzuki parts go through 6 permutations all replacing one another.

Failing that, I've seen some parts that were supposed to be different, but were almost or pretty much identical. Inner workings, especially of a speedo are a concern, but sometimes you can match something on your own. I've done that, too.
