One of my buddies is friends with the guys that own Side Striders in Van Nuys and today I sealed the deal of me rebuilding the engine in one of his DOHC CB450 side car rigs and he will give me another one just like it for the cost of my labor fixing the engine.
This is the rig I get when the job is done.

Guys like us could never have enough room but, the place we are buying has a large 2.5 car garage and that garage has front & back doors to bring vehicles into the back yard for storage in the air conditioned shed. Wink

I picked up the 450 I have to fix and really like the color a lot, it is the color my 450 may turn out to be.

There's your problem, it was 3 mile island inside and the core started to lose it's dialithium crystal.

Nothing like a melt down, they suck no matter how you look at it.

The head will be easy to clean up for more service but, the pistons need to be replaced with overbore jammies.

Ray, do you think someone ran it low on oil or was it overheated?

That is a burned piston from an extremely lean condition, the crank case contained all the oil it was supposed to have when I drained it. Rolling Eyes
The head gasket was blown out on the left side too but, I don't know if it happened before during or after the melt down. Confused

I cleaned the cylinders real good by soaking them in Awesome & hot water today and got a close up look inside the cylinder, holy flying rat shit Batman. Shocked

How do you like the damage to the piston, pretty isn't it? Sad

The head is apart and now clean with the valves lapped in but, I forgot to order the valve guide seals/caps yesterday and will not have them until Thursday. That means I can't do anything on re-assembly of the head until Thursday afternoon.

I found some bad things when I opened the head and this was them.

A newer cam and follwers have been bought from eBay and they should be here tomorrow.
I have a pair of pistons in the 3rd over size {on their way confirmed Wink } from Western Hills Honda in Ohio, the new rings came from eBay and so did the Vesrah gasket set. Hopefully those pistons get here today so I can get the cylinders opened up and finish the engine & get it back in the bike to get it out of here before I move to Granada Hills into our new to us 73 year old house.

The new pistons got here today along with all the other parts I needed to get this engine finished.
Check out the old & new B rollers.

Tomorrow I drop the cylinders & pistons off to the machinest and will finish re-assembling the head.
Almost done, I love it when an engine is coming together.
And I even polished some covers.

Cam timing a DOHC CB450 alone is a challenging task but, I did it and am real fuckin proud of myself. Cool
This is my 1st 450 top end rebuild and I had to replace a lot of parts but, if you don't attempt it, you will never know how to get her done. Wink
