Hi there,

I have a 71 a50 which I just finished rebuilding. I replaced the big-end bearing as the engine was siezed.
I am struggling to restart the bike back up and was after some help.

General info:

-The bike is producing a regular strong spark
-I have opened the carburetor plug screw to check there is petrol in the bowl, which there is and it flows out constantly
-I am fairly confident I got the rotary timing disc in the correct position
-I have tried squirting petrol straight into the cylinder and starting it (to no avail)
-I have tried squirting petrol straight into the intake tube which the carburetor sits around
-Push starting it does not work
-There is good compression in the cylinder with all gaskets having been replaced

Any help and new ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Nick.

Have you checked the timing?

Nothing was changed on the stator plate in terms of adjustment and it was put back on in exactly the same position as it was before. Even if the timing was slightly out surely there would be some kind of response from the engine anyway?

I just had a look at the rotary timing plate and it opens as the piston comes down, so that's in the right spot, so I don't think it's a timing issue.

Must be a fuel problem??

So I just cleaned out the fuel tank and took out and cleaned the whole on/off petrol valve as there was 40 years worth of grit and rust, so now petrol can flow freely to the carb. However, the bike will still not start Evil or Very Mad ah! When I kick it over there is no hint of combustion starting which is rather troubling. The battery has enough errgs left in it to work the horn and indicators with no trouble, but the front light only comes on as I kick it, would it pay to get the battery fully charged or would this not be causing the lack of ignition??
