My bike was making a severe rattling noise, so I attempted to do a top end rebuild to replace the cam chain, tensioner, and components, but soon found I was in a little over my head. I took my bike to the only place I knew of at the time, and they said the cam chain/tensioner was fine, but the camshaft needed to be replaced. I was quoted $500 NZD to just replace the camshaft so I looked elsewhere and found an older gentleman who worked on pre 1995 Hondas out of his home.
The same day I gave the man a ring, I brought the motor in and he had the top end apart on literally less than 5 minutes. Not only was the camshaft fine, the chain, tensioner, and sprocket were all shot. He took the motor apart in front of me and showed me the signs of wear on each part. He even pulled the piston and showed me how it was showing signs of seizing in the cylinder.
The best part? he quoted me $120 labour to get the bike back together and offered to let me watch him get it all back together!
Unfortunately, it might be cheapter to buy a plane ticket to Thailand to pick up all the necessary parts than it is to buy online Sad

Chin up! There's still good mechanics out there when you find yourself in over your head!
