i recently replaced my exhaust gaskets and when i unbolted the right side exhaust collar the threads came out with one of the bolts..... yet again it went from simple to well a big kick in the head. i am hoping i can just re-tap it one size bigger and bolt it back up but i wanted to check to see if any of the more experienced member had any advice before i go ahead and try to re tap the threads.... it wasnt a lot of damage so im hoping i can just go one size bigger b/c i dont want to have to expand the collar holes any advice is greatly appreciated thanks _________________ " Never mind the track the track is for punks. | Can you give us some more information please? Spefically year, make and model of your bike. If it is a 60's era Japanese bike you will need Taps and dies made for JIS threads. |

If you're going to retap the threads in a larger size, you don't need JIS, you can make them anything you want, Metric, SAE,.....If I were you, I'd take a look at a heli coil or timesert kit. Might be better in the long run.

What Paul said and if the threads came out with the bolt, it probably left a pretty clean hole and you probably won't even need to pre-drill for the new insert. _________________ _________________________________

The metric heli-coil is the best way to go, so all your exhaust studs are the same size. That lets the exhaust gaskets seal properly. You can get them at just about any auto parts store. _________________ MY BIKES: 1967 YAMAHA YL1E, 1980 HONDA CB900C, 1982 SUZUKI GS1100GL(project bike), 1975 KAWASAKI Z-1 903 . |
