I'm replacing the front fork seals on my '72 cb175 and I took the forks apart, got the old seals out and decided to remove the screws at the bottom of the forks in order to remove the damping rods and really get the fork lowers all cleaned out. Here's my problem......now I'm not sure which rod goes back in which fork lower. They look identical, but the holes in the rods are not facing in the same direction. In other words, the bottom of the rod has a rounded base that sits in the bottom of the fork lower. It is not entirely round, but has a straight edge to it, as if the base of the fork lower had a straight section into which it sits in order to keep it from spinning when you tighten it. Surprisingly, the bottom base of the inside of the fork lower is simply round, so it looks like the dampening rod can spin. As a result, I'm not sure it matters which rod I put in which fork lower. Should the holes in the rod face any particular direction? I'm guessing those rods will spin a bit while I tighten the screws so it really won't matter how careful I am about which direction the rods face when I first put them in the fork lower.

I looked up the front fork diagrams and those rods do not show up so I can't get a part number to see if they are the same for the right fork as for the left fork.

I think I'll just clean it all up, put it back together and not worry about it which rod goes in which lower, but thought I'd ask if anyone has any knowledge about this.

Thanks!

That's right. The rods don't show up, and neither do the screws you removed to extract them. Are you sure your bike doesn't have forks from some other model? Normally, the damper rods are interchangeable side to side.

Thanks for the reply. This is my second set of front forks for this bike (this set off Ebay) and they both had this same set up. As a result, I suspect they are original to the '72 cb175, but not certain the first set was original (first set had a bent tube....so I got the current set off ebay). All the other parts match right up to the schematics, so I'm thinking they are the right forks.

Has anyone else changed the seals on the cb175 and found these damper rods in the fork lowers?

As always....thanks for sharing the wisdom!
