I've been adding a bunch of projects to my collection, and I always like to know exactly what I'm working on. So I got this (1966 titled) Yamaha I would like clarification on the model, if there's any extreme Yamaha historians out there. The Vin is Y28-12163. I know the Y28 means it's a YJ2 with 60cc engine and 4-speed? So here's my confusion - Is it a "Campus 60" or a "Riverside 60"? I understand the Riverside came out earlier and was 55cc until 1965, then became 60cc's. A tech service bulletin states that the VIN after Y28-13965 was called the new 1966 Campus 60 and had higher compression and other performance improvements. Or was that higher performance bike called the YJ2S which I can't find any identification info for that model. I'm just not sure what it is exactly that I have. Here's links to some references.

I went through my old magazines for 1966 and in the December Cycle there is a Yamaha ad that refers to the Campus 60. It is similar to yours with the exception of an enclosed chaincase and I suspect a single rear sprocket. BTW list price was $285.

This bike originally had an enclosed chain cover, the PO removed it in the late 60's when the large sprocket was installed. He thought it would be unlikely to find it again. I probably will also have difficulty locating one. It also had a rear mud flap that is missing, other than that I can't find anything that has been disturbed. I removed the plug and turned on the ignition key and kicked it over, with battery out and had good spark. I believe it will be an easy start-up once the fuel system is clean.
Thanks for the info Bentwheel, my Cycle magazines are missing some issues back past 1967 so haven't seen a specific ad for it yet.
I have seen brochures claiming you can be "the big man on campus" with one of these bikes. I think you might actually be the laughing stock of the campus today riding one.
