I am rebuilding a Yamaha 1989 FJ600.

When I hit the starter the starter solenoid clicks very fast. The starter does nothing.

Is this normal? Is the power, solenoid or starter the problem?

The oil level light is out, and the transmission is in neutral.

When I bought the bike, the battery was dead, but the bike could be started by running with it and dumping the clutch.
For power I have a jumper cable running from my Miata battery. There is a charger cable running to the battery which is in fairly good shape.

fast clicking mostly means not enough "juice in the battery to have starter turned. You might otherwise look for some bad contact Idea
