Hi folks, I'm curious if it's normal to hear a low level noise from the my 1979 DT175 transmission. When I pull in the clutch lever the noise disappears. Any comments would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Wally B.

Normally all bikes make a certain amount of noise-theres alot of action going
on in the tranny-Check that your oil is not black and cruddy...the oil weight
may be too heavy....It shifts ok and the clutch works?

Hippykid,
Thanks for the quick response. The clutch is working fine and the tranny goes through the gears smoothly. I purchased the DT over the winter and did a complete engine rebuild. I filled the tranny with 650cc's of GL-5 gear oil, and just replaced that with Mobil 10-30 oil , but no change in the low noise level. I rode Yamaha MX125 and 250's in the 70's, and don't remember hearing this tranny noise, but I was much younger then and probably had my mind on other things.
Thanks again,
Wally B.

To any of you 1970's DT 125 / 175 owners: The next time you crank-up your DT would you do a transmission sound check for me? With the engine warmed up, and transmission in Neutral, listen for a low level noise coming from the tranny, and when the clutch lever is pulled-in the noise goes away. Appreciate your help. Cheers, Wally B.

Last night I was listening to a 250 2 stroke twin as it popped away at idle and the difference in the various internal noises when the clutch lever was pulled in was striking. It had been perhaps 20 years since I'd last listened closely to a stroker and to be blunt the noises alarmed me.However I think they were almost certainly totally normal. The difference is that back when I was riding such machines all the time I never gave listening to the motor working any thought at all!

One thing does strike me and that is that the vertically split cases on the single cylinder machines don't absorb the clanking and whirring noises as well as the horizontally split cases on other machines.

The following link is on a Suzuki but sounds like same problem....same cause? I don't know if there are service bulletins readily available(spec repairs) for your bike about the problem you are having. Hope this at least gets you yet some more replies. Good luck.

Russell & dorT500,
Many thanks for your replies. I'm still hoping for a fellow DT owner to conduct a "sound" check for me to see if what I'm hearing falls into the NORMAL category.
Happy Trails,
Wally B.

Any DT 125 or DT175 owners out there willing to do a transmission sound test for me would be greatly appreciated. (see above postings)
Cheers,
Wally B.

Wally, I finally got my 78 DT175 out and fired it up. I rode it up to the gas station and back. Yes there is a whirring noise at the clutch side, it changes pitch to a much lower level with the clutch pulled in. Also have the same noise on my DT125 (81) and YZ250. Yamaha thing???
Hope this helps.

Nuck,
Many thanks for doing a sound test for me........... Your the BEST. Now I can ride the trails without fear of having to push the DT all the way back home (up hill all the way too).
Happy Trails to You,
Wally B.
