Hey Folks just a quick note about off color posts and graphics. Try to keep in mind that people will be visiting our site from any number of places. Whether it be from work or in mixed company of family or whatever. We are also a very new site and are hoping to attract a very diverse group of new members. Keep in mind first impressions are lasting impressions so use your best judgment. We don’t want to scare anybody off. (which is already happening)

Cheers,

Dave

okay

so dave while we are discussing family values and all

I would imagine your avatar could be deemed offensive to some, not me, of course

and when will the avatar police , start cracking done on others, and who will be the judge?

a woman or a man

or a child under 14 who wants to join, rides a dirt bike

I didnt think this was a playground, with families hunching around a moniter, eating popcorn

as in other walks of life, if you start to read or see something you dont like , dont read it

I would think locations are an important part of forums, that should be enforced as well

there needs to be a level playing field, and if censorship is here, Im gone

you can delete my membership , pronto

thank you ..john

I'll keep it PG-13. Can't promise G rating. Sorry. I figure I am talking to adults. And some things are seen offensive no matter what you do. But I agree with you. No need to scare people away. We might be "bikers" but there is no need to fall to the stereotypes.

Thank you for mentioning this. I had already dropped down to an infrequent visitor because of this. Not that I add much value, but....

I figure if I want porno/smut/etc., I can go to a porno/smut/etc. site...

I've seen it happen time and again with forums. Without civility and rules, the civil move on....

Yea that’s what ultimately happens. People start to back away from the group. Most of the time just silently. It also affects new people joining the group because most folks will lurk around at first before they post. If they don’t like the lay of the land they just move on so you miss out on a lot of potentially active members. It’s quiet forum suicide.

Another biggie is that a LOT of people visit forums while at work. HR departments are REALLY tough these days about Internet usage on the job and it’s absolutely in the realms of possibilities that someone could get unceremoniously marched out the front door with a pink slip if they are caught browsing the “wrong” sites so it makes people paranoid if they have to worry about clicking on a thread and not knowing what to expect. Most companies will turn a blind eye if people are popping in on their favorite biker sites and eBay but when the content starts going over the top and pushing the envelope it could be putting someone’s job at risk.

Another aspect to consider is that there are actually a lot of ladies that visit the forums even though they are generally not huge posters. I know my wife Monika follows the forums more than I do and she is in here every day. Not because she is nosy or anything like that, she loves the forums and enjoys them. I’m sure the case is probably the same with many of our wives. They are part of our culture and are naturally interested in what’s new in the forums.

This isn’t to say things have to be overly sterile for the ladies. Most of them understand that guys are guys so they don’t really care, but the ladies are something to consider if you are planning on making a shock post.

I can totally understand where Biquetoast is coming from when he says he has seen this happen time and time again with forums. We all have. But how many of those sites are survivors and get big? Not one that I can think of. They usually fizzle out and die within the first year. All the big boards find a happy medium that everyone can live with.

I don’t think anyone wants a G rated or sterile forum. That wouldn’t be any fun but some of you folks really need to think before hitting that post button. It’s not like anyone is being overly conservative or anything like that. It’s more like we have all seen it and done it before and its starting to get sort of lame by now.

Cheers,

Dave

I wrote about this very type of thing a little over a year ago, while we were still intended to be a "VJMC"-related forum, before the big growth spurt... please read:

It does not matter to me one bit, I have calmed my mouth and that is what matters to Dave.

Actually the moderators were very much involved with this and the person in question didn’t simply leave, he had help. We just didn’t see any reason to raise the drama level in the forums. For the most part all the mods are really laid back about things and let people do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. We understand this is a biker forum and not an English tea party and we want people to have fun.

The thing is, if we start getting valid complaints from members we take action. Otherwise we let things ride unless things get out of hand. Moderators are here to support community standards not dictate them so member feedback is important.

Ray,

Personally I have never seen a problem with your posts. You are just a straight up kind of guy and tell it like it is. If people cant handle that then its probably more their problem and not yours. Thumbsup
