Always a touchy subject. What's good oil for my CB500? Won't be run much in the cold but will certainly a little action in 40 degrees. I used to run 20w50. VR1 maybe? for the zinc?

seriously, I have to fill it with something...preferably cheap, I change oil a lot. My feeling is a good oil changed often is better than a slightly better oil you run too long.
I run Castrol 10/40 mineral oil in my CBX and CB900, Semi synthetic 10/40 in the GS1000 and CBR1000F. I also only run genuine filters in the older bikes.
For the cost involved go with the best that you can afford. As you said, regular oil and filter changes can only be a good thing
In the end it is all down to personal choice. The oil thread, along with the colour thread, will live on long after we have all passed away

If you want to keep it as a bike and not as a paper weight, use Castrol 20W50. Change oil and filter every 3500 miles. _________________ ...Brian

Years ago ( way back in the early '80s and prior) we would run nothing but Castrol in our street and race bikes, somewhere around '82-'83 Castrol changed the molecular structure of the oil. We found under hard running conditions that the oil would breakdown when reaching high tempetures, causing a knock in the bottom end, after cooling, all seemed normal. Switching to a different brand cured our knocking problem.
Since then there have been many advances in the oil industry. I had heard of Amsoil back in '72 when they first started, didn't think much about them then as it was new. But over the yrars that has changed.
All of my engines (anything that needs lube) have been running on Amsoil for the last 10 years.
The air cooled engines run 20 degrees or more cooler with Amsoil, cold weather starting is much easier, here during the heat of the summer anything to get rid of that horsepower robing heat is helpful.
Always remember "oil is cheaper than enging parts".
There are many oils on the market today, either dinasours type or synthetic type. All of us have our preferences in oil, mine just happend to be Amsoil, and the funny thing is that most of my freinds have switched to Amsoil in their cars amd motorcycles.
