I have a 76 kz900. It is a sweet bike with lots of power. I am having trouble with the head light dimming starting at the speed of 30 - 40; and the faster i go, the head light dim more and more and then will turn completely off. When I squeeze the clutch or slow down, then the light comes back to normal. If I have the head light on high beam, nothing happen. Can anyone help? Any tips? On the stator side, the other day when I tried to open the cover, oil started to gush out. Is that suppose to hapen? Question I do not have the manaul, yet.

i would suggest you check the regulator and the rectifier.

Does that mean you have no high beam at all, or do you mean that the high beam isn't affected by engine rpm?

Yes. It's a wet stator. Drain the engine oil before removing the cover.

Thx for the advise and input. The high beam was working, do matter what speed I was driving. Now, the low and high beam will not work at all . I just ordered a manual for the bike, but would like to start before the book arrive. How do I check to see if the rectiflier and volt regular is working?

Did you check all 3 fuses? there is a 10a for the lights, maybe a bad connection which is where I'd start, could be loose or corroded. The 73-78 models use a mechanical voltage reg. check the points for wear. Check the battery with a voltmeter +to+, -to- and run the engine at 4000 rpm, the voltmeter should read 14-15 volts. If you get a higher reading then the reg could be bad or have a bad conn. If the meter reads less than 14v then the rect or alt is bad, shut it off and pull the green voltage reg. plug from the plug behind the side cover, restart and run at 4000, check the voltmeter, it should read 14-20 volts, if so then the alt and reg are good and the voltage reg is faulty. If the meter reads less than 14v the reg. is probably good and the rect. or alt. is bad. If you want to check the rectifier resistance, with the engine off unplug the white rect. plug and unplug the white wire going to the batt. set up your ohmeter for rx1 or rx10 take a measurement between 2 wires and then repeat with the leads reversed on the same wires, in one of the 2 test the reading should be very low, in the other it should be 10x greater.. Check resistance between the white wire and the 2 yellow and the black wire and each of the yellow. this gives 6 combinations to check and 12 measurements, in taking the 2 readings across a pair of wires, if you find that the reading is either high or low in both directions, replace the rectifier. Hopefully this will get you started and solve the problem before your book arrives.....Blue
