my first hour on a bike was 30 yrs ago.

i hit a tree.
2 weeks of traction and a titanium rod in my l-femur later,
i was on the back of my buds cb 750 going down the I-5 in traffic.
cast, crutches and all hanging off the side.
I WAS HOOKED

Thanks KirkN, I'll definitely give it a visit.
Now you all say that the bike usually has tranny problems. Is there is fix to it, whenever the problem comes. |

| Actually the second gear problem is an easy fix according to the triples form that KirkN posted. I used to peruse that forum, do a search and you will find the fix. I think it is only a shim problem that can be accessed without splitting the cases. |

| Don't bet on it. That 2nd gear thing maybe a lot more than just a shim from the outside. I have not personally done one but I have heard horror stories. |

Yeah, me too.
I finally gave up on my OWN XS750 project because, right or wrong, I came to understand that it was a case-splitting excercise to fix, and my heart just wasn't that in it...
I had mine running well, but it wouldn't go into / stay in 2nd. If you skipped right on to 3rd, it was fine. But, it was just more of a project than I wanted.
But, if yours doesn't have the problem already, I'd be less worried about it. |

| So i got the bike on friday. Had the friend drive it to a large empty school parking lot. Got on and putted around for a bit, slowly getting more comfortable. Got up to about thirty in the lot. My friend left and i drove around more until i kicked off the lot by some asshole janitor. But now i have to get it home. Only a few miles on back roads. Got home safe, got up to about fifty. Then i drove around my neighborhood for a bit. Got off for a bit, came back to get on, and drive a few yards to realize my rear tire is flat. Long story short, the valve stem blew. Rusted away. now i have the part on order. |

| So you'll be checking out the valve stem at the front as well? You don't need a blow-out as you learn to handle your bike. |

| Well the front stem looks like it was replaces recently. Though ill definitely take a closer look. Probably replace both anyway just for the sake of confidence and looks. |

| Man I can't wait to post some more pics of this bike. Been doing some work on it, while it was at my girlfriends house. Her dad has all the tools and skills to get the bike looking good. We've been going away at it. Should have it back Friday. It already looks like a different bike. |

| So I finally got to take it for a real ride. I had a great time. Couple of question. It has a hard time starting a lot of the time, even when hot,(it dies on me when idling). Also, it backfires some of the time when trying to get it to start. Also, Some one said I can put carb cleaner right it the gas, is that OKay? And can you help me with the other problems as well. |

Depends on lotsa things. It is just possible that you have the idle set too low and that could effect starting as well as mean it just stalls when you close the throttle.
The backfiring effect has me thinking you may have water in the carbs. So as a first step drain the float bowls.
One old trick when there is reason to suspect water in the tank and carbs is to put methylated spirits in the petrol. It will go through the system without interfering with the combustion process and takes water with it(don't ask me why I'm not a chemist). Half a litre of meths with 10 or more litres of petrol will work well. |
