I recently got an original exhaust system through ebay for my 1979 KZ750 twin. Everything is structurally sound but surface rust has replaced the chrome up near the head. I cleaned off all of the rust. I like the look of the shiny metal but I know the rust will soon be back so I have resigned myself to paint the pipes and mufflers black. Is there a type and/or specific brand of high heat spray paint that works the best? Thanks.

Hey, So the heat paint question. I have had several degrees of luck, the main thing I found out was if you see a rattle can that boasts 1300 degrees, read the back of the can, they usually list a sustained temperature, which in most cases is less than the "headline" numbers on the front. Check several brands, but if I'm not mistaken, Krylon brand is a good one. The other alternative is to get good header paint in a rattle can at a hot rod shop, the header paint usually requires a start, heat, cool, start, heat, cool cycle to set the paint, I did this on my street rod and it is on it's second season. One more choice is to have them ceramic coated, fairly pricey but a choice of colors and a dull silver that looks pretty utilitarian. Not much can be done with rusted chrome except stay on it always. That gets old fairly quick. Hope this helps, later.........Blue

Hey, DaveG, sorry I didn't see your post but I've recently asked a fairly similar question in a post here. There were some interesting responses that I'm keen to check out. Good luck with it and let me know how you go, and what you settle for! I have a few things that need doing before I look at the exhaust, but its really handy to know how other people are attacking it.
