hey im from a little west of philly. i just saw the yo adrien dude haha
i live right outside of exton. my daily rider is a 1989 katana 750 which is a great bike. as for cages, im into nissans. have a turbo 240sx along with some other cool ones.

anyway, down to business...

i just bought my 1st 'vintage' bike which is a 1979 suzuki gs550L. its not in the best condition as it is, but its not half bad for its age. its missing the tach, it has aftermarket bars which are messing up the throttle and clutch cables, something is messed up with the points plate so it doesnt exactly run, 20k miles, seats coming apart, starter button is nonexistant, so theres 2 wires to touch together, light switch doesnt work so theres a flip switch hanging from 2 wires, turn signals work but dont blink, gotta clean up some surface rust here and there, front fender is bashed up...

good things are the paint is still pretty good on tank and battery covers, it has cool wheels haha, the headers are pretty clean and rust free for the most part, fork seals are good! lol, battery is good, i heard the thing run after some playing with the points, but it died right out in a couple minutes, brakes seems fine, chain and sprockets are said to be pretty new (a lil rusty tho?) gear selection works ontop of the gauges, paid 200 for it so thats decent, clean title...

1st things 1st, i want to get it running. anyone have any experience with the dyna ignitions for a bike like this? the points seems to be having probs so i was thinking about replacing the whole shebang with a dyna. also, where can i get one for cheaper? or how about just stock parts for this bike?

also, i was contemplating just ditching the whole speedometer and everything up there. it would allow the clutch and throttle cables to run a better path, would make everything a lot more simple (hopefully) and the tach is already gone anyway. but is this illegal?

Welcome from another Pennsylvanian. The bike doesn't look too bad. It looks like a good starting point for a nice classic ride. In order to pass state inspection, I'm pretty sure you'll need a speedo. You don't need a tach, but wouldn't it be easier to just find a good set of clocks and bars on ebay? I'm pretty sure there's a set on there now. Have fun.

Congrats! The Suzuki GS550 is a very good bike. Reliable motor, smooth. I just sold a 1980 GS550E and that motor ran perfect and sweet. I believe you can still get Dyna electronic ignition for that bike but check. It is pretty easy to install as well. Can't hurt. Wait a minute, my 1980 GS550E had electronic ignition already. Why would the 79 GS550L not have electronic ignition. Double check but maybe not????
