|
|
Hey guys just a heads up on whats coming down the pipe.
We will be moving to a new server. This is for a couple of reasons. The first is that the hosting company we are with completely blows and the second is that I have built us a new privately owned server and will be doing my own web hosting and just renting the rack space in the datacenter. (Collocation)
This is a nice plan because you only pay for the rack space, the electricity and the network connection and they can care less what you stick in there so it costs the same whether you are running an entry level server or a high-end hot rod.
Naturally it makes sense to go as high end as possible to get the best value so thats exactly what I did. The new server is about the hottest setup you can possibly run these days and if I were to go out and rent one it would cost about $650.00 per month. I figure the server will pay for itself within the first year.
For you geeks it runs 2 Intel Xeon 5160 dual core processors, 6 gigs of the new fully buffered memory and 2-72 Gig 10,000 RPM hot swap Raptor drives running on 64-bit Linux.
We will be moving to one of the best datacenters out there with super fat pipes and the location is one of the most desirable locations in the world because it is at one of the 3 major interconnects to the main Internet backbone. (MAE-Central in Dallas Texas) so no matter where you are located in the world you should get blazing speed.
The server went out 2nd day air this morning so it will be in Dallas on Thursday. This should give the guys in the datacenter plenty of time to get it racked so I can get to work on it over the weekend. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done but if all goes smooth I could be ready to flip us over to the new server as early as Saturday night.
I will need to take the forums offline to lock them during the transition so no posts get lost. Ill put out a notification once I have a better idea on exactly when the switch will take place.
Cheers,

The server has actually been done for a while now. It’s just that after spending weeks testing out all the latest flavor of the day software I had to take a break from it.
Then around the middle of last week we started having problems with the web hosting and the people at the web hosting company turned out to have really horrible attitudes.
So I guess its time to cut and run. Ill fire the hosting company when we get over to the new server. It’s a good thing I took the hint the last time we had problems with them and built that server.
It was funny as all heck because the last time I dealt with tech support they were getting all smart assed with me acting like they were doing me some sort of favor for even hosting the site as though we were captive or something. I think they were at a loss for words when I ended the conversation with. Ok thank you, I just happen to have a brand new dual 5160 server sitting next to me postmarked colo4dallas. BAHAHA! Classic.
Sometimes I kill myself. _________________ 78 Honda GL1000

Dave, you are a geek. And a damn good one at that. Is this money out of your own pocket or how does it work? Anyway, this forum website has been one of the best things I have been involved with. Keep up the great work and if you need anything, let me know. |

I pay for it out of my own pocket. I have about $4,000.00 invested in the new server and collocation costs will run about $69.00 per month for the rack space.
That’s why I hope people will put this resource to good use and support the site with their participation.
Cheers,

I don’t really beat up on web hosting companies too bad it’s just that I am an IT professional and I won’t tolerate incompetence or unprofessional behavior from hosting companies. After all they work for me. I don’t work for them. I’m “paying” them for services and “expect” them to deliver the service level that was promised upon entering the deal. If they can’t meet their service level agreement then I will simply replace them. Business be business.
Regardless it’s really of no matter. The real attraction to making the move is to improve the performance of the site. These sort of sites really shine when you run them on really big bad dedicated servers. _________________ 78 Honda GL1000

Dave; thanks for all your hard work on this site and on the new server. Yes; it is frustrating to deal with "tech support" when there isn't enough "tech" or "support" there.
Hope to meet some of you guys in CA in October at the Frazier Park event. _________________ Beth Braun |

You are most welcome Beth. I guess it just comes down to the old saying “If you want things done right you have to do it yourself.” The email settings finally kicked in so I guess there is no time like the present to move us to the new site.
I will lock the forums shortly so we don’t loose any posts. Seeya on the other side.
Cheers,

No we’re good. Sometimes it can take up to 72 hours for changes like this to kick in. Ill have to run around a bit tweaking a few things but that should be no problem.
Anyway welcome to the new digs. Others will probably be along shortly.
Cheers,
