Does anyone you happen to know what the "coating" is that Honda used that covers their aluminum parts such as the brake drum housings?

Is it some type of clear lacquer? It's turned yellow now and I want to remove it so I can polish the parts and have them clear powder coated.

Any tips on how to remove this stuff without scratching the surface?

Thanks, Steve

Spray paint remover, commonly known as aircraft stripper will take it off. You can get it at most auto part stores.

If it's an old original part, it could be Cosmoline. It's not used much these days, but old parts were often coated with the stuff to prevent corrosion. If what you're seeing is Cosmoline, WD-40 takes it right off.

I've received old HONDA NOS parts coated with Cosmoline, especially chrome plated trim parts.

I am now in the process of fixing up my old Honda CB160 and I noticed the same thing on my rear brake drum and also on the engine as well. I used a tiny bit of paint remover spread lightly over it. This did remove the yellowed coating/lacquer (or whatever it is) but then I had to go through a major process of polishing the drum itself. The flash on the camera is accenting the polish marks from the wheel, but I had polished it some more by 'hand' and those don't show up now.

EDIT: Not sure why the photos get smaller when you click on them, but you get the idea of the "yellow".

Clearcoat that is now yellowing...that's all. As Paul had mentioned, letting some Aircraft Remover lay on the old hard coating for awhile should do the trick....you may have to repeat the process. As far as clear powdercoating is concerned, I myself, would be concerned about it not being clear enough.

Speaking of which...has anybody here tried this? .... http://www.por15.com/GLISTEN-PC/productinfo/GPCGG/

Clearcoat or constant polishing once the original clearcoat is removed from the aluminum. I for one just try to keep up on the aluminum polishing but doing that is getting old fast. Rolling Eyes

OK dor, sounds like you're volunteering to try it out. Why don't go ahead and buy a gallon of the stuff, and if it works out OK, I'll send you some pieces to do for me. Wink Laughing

I use this stuff called Jasco paint remover I bought from eBay

My CBX and my CL350 have polished fork sliders and other little polished bits here & there and I love the part of polishing it regularly, it is a labor of love that if left un polished makes it look like I don't love my motorcycles which I do very much love.

The joy of polishing comes & goes. Shocked
I just touched up the front wheel hub & fork sliders of my Scrambler a week and a half ago, they look great. Cool
I need to get busy on my CBX's aluminum again sometime in the near future. Rolling Eyes
Doing an initial polishing is a lot of work, it's the touch ups or maintenance jobs that are not so bad. Wink

Laughing Not only does your aluminum not shine, but even the chrome doesn't reflect light! Laughing maybe you ship the rat down to Ray for the winter and let him shine it up. Wink
