OK i tested my 76 wing today & went the route of testing the 3 yellow wires coming out of the back of the engine , a to b, a to c , (you know the rest) well anyways i get no matter the combo i get 00.4 ohms on my Fluke 77 digital multimeter. Is this too much or is it just a little high & good to continue working on this bike, or is it too high & need to take the engine out of the frame & replace the stator.

Thanks

It is a mighty low Ω reading but, if they were all 3 identical, it might still be a good stator.
I will be dropping a GL1100 engine for a burnt stator 1st week of November when my customer comes back from vacation.
Go to this page and read then test your parts again, Tony owns a GL himself and is a friggin genius. Wink

Thank you both & went back out & zero`d my meter again & get oo.6 & the one article said

(Two of the stator tests are passive resistance or continuity tests. First we will
test for resistance or shorts between the stator legs themselves. Turn off your
motorcycle. Set your meter for ohms measurement and test the resistance
between A-B, B-C, and A-C. The reading should be less than 2 ohms but not
zero (0.5-2.0 ohms).

So i guess i`m on the low side Confused but not zero Very Happy i will go back & check each to ground & see the results. I can`t do the start & run test as i have no battery & this bike hasn`t ran in a loooooong time. Once i do get it running i`m going to use this method to get it back up & road worthy. If that GL has not run in a long time, you will be doing a carb clean at least with a smart idea of replacing the float valves and bowl gaskets and maybe some o-rings but, that's not a bad job on GL carbs. Carb sync on a GL1000 is fairly easy too if you have a Morgan CarbTune.

Did you check to see if you have continuity to ground from the yellow wires? Resistance should be infinite. There should be no connection between the unplugged yellow wires to ground.

Carbs done with Randak kits & are waiting installation (if stator works out) . Also brake system rebuilt & waiting on lines & pads. Will check wires to ground after I do a litter more yard work.

Good luck on the charging system, I hope you have no problems with it and can get that beast on the road soon.
Randakk's = GOOD.
I have decided that I want a 75 or 76 GL1000 for my own personal use but, it has to wait until I finish my next CBX build.

FISH!!! Where have you been? I thought maybe that you gave up on your wing and moved on to other projects. So you still have it and it's still not done?!! Laughing The stators on the early wings (75-79) usually hold up pretty good except for the main connectors, it's the 1100 that had weak stators. If you need one, let me know, I can help you out. I still owe you lunch Wink

Thanks Paul !! Nope didn`t give up on old red Very Happy Been busy at work & putting on a ton of miles on my 07 FJR, so the wing was put on hold Crying or Very sad . Every fall i get a hankerin to start working on her again. So i am, & will hopefully get her at least starting & running by the winter. I will use a gas can on the side of the bike , so not to put gas in my redone gas tank & let it sit too long. (again) Laughing Thanks for the offer & will see right after i get it fired up.

OH by the way i get this when grounding each wire at a time

If you're checking from any yellow wire to ground, it should be an open circuit. If not, it's time to pull the engine. Now let's get that thing running, the NGW eastern rally is in our back yard next year (West Virginia).

I havn`t been on there for a long time & when i did go on to see whats going on, i read about cookie & was very bummed out about his passing & by that time i didn`t know what to say or if i would be welcome there. So i have been luking in the back ground (like here also) I`ll have to look at the details on the meet & see if i have off for a full weekend , or maybe just buzz over for the day.

Funny thing about the bikes i have owned , as back then they were new & now there vintage Laughing

Yeah, it's a real shame about Cookie, he was a great guy. I'm sorry that I never got to meet him in person, but I felt like he was an old friend. I don't think you need to worry about being welcome, people come and go all the time..........and come back. Laughing The rally is scheduled for the week leading up to Vintage Days so some of guys can head there after the rally.
