Most dealerships in my area are charging $100 an hour for labor.
Like Steve, I work out of a shop behind my house with little overhead. I specialize in Hondas, mostly CBXs and 1100Fs. As a certified master mechanic for over 30 years my rate is $50 an hour plus materials. I'm happy to show you my credentials and provide references. Your mechanic should too.
If you take it to your typical "ham fisted" mechanic who doesn't have a clue about what he's about to work on, they'll probably do more damage than good.
Working on vintage bikes requires not only technical expertise but patience so as not to damage anything since a lot of the replacement parts are very expensive or unobtainable.
If you're unable to do the work yourself then be prepared to take it to someone that can do the work properly that maintains the safety, reliability and value of your investment.
