I put the Star Tron stuff in all my bikes, at the recommendation of my local bike mechanic. He says it really does make a difference when using Ethanol fuel. I have to admit though, it does sound like snake oil.

The only meaningful way to test Star Tron would be to leave it in a wet carb for 2 - 3 years and see if the bike would still start up and idle when put back in service. If so I might be interested, however if I plan to lay up a bike that long I'll drain the entire fuel system including bowls prior to storage.
What about the other claims? Removes carbon, unclusters fuel molecules, more complete combustion, etc.? I'm all for keeping the fuel fresh and preventing moisture-related damage. The rest of those claims just seem like so much BS - same claims made for the Fuel Boss Magnetic Fuel Saver from JC Whitney.

I would say we need to do a test where we compare all three of these products. Use one standard U.S. Gallon of gasoline. Have one gallon be untreated as a control. Let the three treated gallons sit for a period of say 3 to 6 months, and then each gallon in a bike under normal riding conditions for 40 miles. I would like to see the results of such a test. As an old motorcycle mechanic told me once "use Seafoam and Marvel Mystery Oil that stuff has been around since the 30's and is time tested. If it has been around that long then you know you can trust it."

Problem is, the issues due to ethanol are fairly recent, and the old standbys weren't designed to deal with those particular problems.

At least Star Tron attempts to explain how their product works. They also site tests done on Star-Tron by several universities. I have used Star Tron for quite a while now and have had excellent results with no side effects. Sta-Bil on the other hand can and will form red crystals under certain conditions causing me to throw away that fuel. Perhaps it was too old. Red crystals can't be good for those tiny low speed jets. It has happened to me and I have seen multiple internet sources stating the same crystal formation from Sta-Bil. At any rate, this isn't an either/or discussion. If you like Sta-Bil then use it if you want. I just posted this info about Star Tron because I thought you guys might like to know about a good product I happened to run across. It works for me. Not all new products are "snake oil" although I know some deceptive products are out there. My latest mixture of gasoline additives is to use the recommended dose of Star Tron along with the correct dose of Sea-Foam to help reduce carbon formation. So far the fuel I have mixed this way seems to be doing great. Time will tell.

If you read the promo material on their website, you'll find the Star Tron is supposed to reduce the carbon all by itself. And aside from cleaning, Sea Foam claims to control moisture and stabilize fuel for 2 years. So if you're mixing in Sea Foam with the Star Tron, you apparently don't have confidence that either one is effective by itself. Do you really have any idea which product was responsible for what effect, or what effect combining the two might have on the effectiveness of either one? If you had a headache, would you take both Tylenol and Advil? Just saying...

Respectfully, they didn't name a single university. They only made vague reference to a marine engineering school and a Pennsylvania school of technology. The reader is left to assume these were some sort of major institution. And the pollutant reduction figures quoted are a fun game to play. Use it on a really crapped up car, and the results could be dramatic. But in a car that had no particular issues, you might see no result at all.

I was a rep for Bilstein when they introduced a fuel system cleaning machine along with a proprietary Super Duper Magic Elixir. We had taken our product to Robert Bosch and several other testing labs and offered the same pollutant reduction figures in our advertising - with an exception. We actually named the facilities, the person doing the testing, and provided details on the test methods and results. We were invited to the GM proving grounds along with our competitors to demo the benefits we claimed. The winner of this competition would be rewarded with a contract to produce product for Kent Moore's service tools division. After a month of testing various vehicles using all of the products, GM determined that while there were a few cases of dramatic results, the general consensus was that the results weren't consistent or repeatable enough to justify endorsing any of the products. However, we and all our competitors started using this phrase in our advertising - Extensively tested by General Motors at the GM Proving Grounds. Weasel wording that proved absolutely nothing about the product's effectiveness. But consumers figured if it was good enough for GM... So now you know why I'm skeptical of claims made by manufacturers - been there, done that.

This is an interesting discussion that needs its own thread. Honestly, I think Stu said enough about the topic for all of us. There is one way to deal with today's ethanol mixtures, other then the illegal practice of getting leaded racing fuel and AV gas. The way to deal with this issue is to do a complete valve job and replace your valves, etc. with stainless steel. Yes I know it is expensive, but if we want to go and ride our old motorcycles this is what we are going to have to do.

Yea, OK, I get your point. Ya know I never promote most products because I'm extremely skeptical in most cases. The fact is that none of these products have any rock solid proof. I have been satisfied with what have seen Star Tron do so far. By that I mean I have some pretty old gasoline in some vehicles that still seems perfectly fresh, runs great in them, and hasn't caused any problems. (I'm talking about gas that should have been stinking like old stale fuel by now.) A few more years down the road and we will know more about it. I think fuel stabilizers are here to stay in one form or another. I guess this (the snake oil syndrome) is one reason the FDA regulates medicines so strictly. Anyone can make claims and sometimes they are hard to refute because of the nature of the information that is collected.. Remember when Slick 50 and Duralube were all the rage with the infomercials etc. Hard to prove them wrong....but equally as hard to prove them right. It's easy to be "taken in" by products and their advertising. My initial results with Star Tron have been very favorable. I didn't do a doctoral thesis on it either. One fact remains....We need a product that stabilizes fuel well, one that helps with ethanol problems, and one that helps move moisture on through a fuel system.

rdaystrom if Star Tron works for you, by all means continue to use it. I can't condem it because I haven't tried it. Many brands of stabalizers work for what we need them for. Which is, and I'll say it again for those it just blew off my previous post, get you through the winter without the need for carb teardown. In other words not jell up and plug up the fuel delivery system while minimizing corrosion. A 3 - 6 month test won't prove crap unless you maybe had a million dollar labratory. Stu, as far as their other claims, ie carbon build up, more complete combustion yada yada, I agree with you that it sounds like more BS. There are far to many other contributing factors to those conditions, from timing, spark intensity, ring condition, combustion chamber temperature and on and on that it would be hard for me to believe it could or should be corrected with their product. The best place for a company to make a laundry list of claims like those, is a in a tent at some county fair, and I seen plenty of them! For christ sakes even coal can burn completely with the right combustion conditions. Keep is simple people and don't expect more from a stabilizer than just that.

I agree with that. And I hope you understand that I'm questioning the advertising methods, not necessarily the product.

I have an old Gold Wing that sits for months at a time and is always a bitch to get running after the nap. I got it running today and put a bottle of Startron in it. Ran it for 30 minutes and put it back to sleep. We'll see how it starts in a couple of months.

Package the marine formula in a different label bottle & you will earn extra funds. For the same amount of funds you can buy a bottle of seafoam & it will do everything the marine formula does.
