I'm working on the front end of my '76 GT500 and looking to replace the bushes on the steering stem head. I ordered some replacements but on closer inspection I find that the bore to take the handle bar clamps is undersize 10mm as apposed to 12mm. I actually have another steering stem head which is exactly the same. I have spoken to another parts supplier and they say the spares I have are what they have to.
Anyone out there any idea whats going on, and can I get a part to match my handle bar clamps?

10mm is what's specified. I know the threads of the bolts are 10mm, but I've forgotten whether the bolt is shouldered up to 12mm above the threads. Is that the case?

Just looked at a spare I have. 12mm shoulder before stepping down to the 10mm threads (T500) any difference in part numbers between the T and GT would probably be because of the finish (chromed or factory black paint).

The same here, threads are 10mm with the shoulder stepping up to12mm. I have 2 sets of handlebar clamps both the same , 1 set of the original bike and 1 off a donor frame. Could it be that was some sort of cross-over point between models?

Right. That's for the T500. The GT500 has different (smaller) sized bushings and different sized handlebar holder bolts. The bushings for the T500 don't show as a separate part from the fork top bridge - no part number. I had a customer in here last week who handed me a pair of bushings he got on eBay for his T500 and wanted them installed. They were part # 09319-10009. Too small to fit his T500.

Well it seems I have that part. Seems that the only way to get around the problem is to either sources some T500 clamps or modify what I have. I have traweled the web for alternative bush suppliers without joy. The joys of restoration!!

Okay, so now we know the story - you had clamps for a T500 and assumed they were the same as for a GT500. What's wrong with the GT500 handlebar clamps that were on the bike? Or were they missing?

The bike and spare frame that i have are both GT500's (according to frame numbers) , but both have the larger bores bushes fitted to the Steering Stem Head so the handle bar clamps have a diameter of 12mm (.472"). This leads me to believe that they are off a T500. Am I just unlucky to have aquired the only 2 GT500's with incorrect handle bar clamps (LOL) or was there some kind of transition period within the factory where certain parts were used up ? To all intents and purposes there is very little dimensionally between the bushes except the internal diameter. Are there any other models that use the larger bored bush?

Post a picture of the upper and lower fork clamps. It's easy to tell the difference between the T and GT models.

Good idea. I am getting all confused. Smile There might even be some Harley bushings/riser bushings in the upper fork clamp? The GT500 upper clamp has a bolt to suck up the slack at the steering stem does'nt it? The T500 does not. Here is an ebay pic for the T500.....
