What I referred to as a sludge drain is at the bottom of the cavity where transmission oil flows to lubricate the center crank bearing. I've never seen any instruction, official or otherwise, to open that drain plug for any reason. I don't know that much crud actually accumulates in there. And if you removed the plug, only a few cc of oil would drain out.

Again, informative post. Always intriqued by the fact that the CCI / "Posi-force" lube system injected oil into the cylinders and exterior crank bearings, but lubrication of the center crank bearing was handled by the gearbox oil. The next time I pull the two plugs to drain the gearbox / clutch I'm going to open that sludge drain up just for the shitz n' giggles to get a look at what's accumulated. I am just getting back into these bikes and have learned more on these boards in a few weeks then I learned riding these things for a few years back in the 70's.

Just make sure you pull the correct bolt. It's the one that does NOT have an "S" on the head. The threads should be only around 1/2" long.
