Thanks dorT500

Actually, that's from that very site under 1972 / T250J (Hustler).

http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm?fpg=/dspt/1972%20T250J/26.htm

Let me go check out the page again and see where I screwed up.

EDIT Did some more digging around (figure I must be goofing badly on the last site) and came up with this

RING SET, PISTON
12140-33012-050 (replaces 12140-33701)

from MotoSport

The specific page here.

Oddly enough, If you go there and select the 72 model, the 73 GT page pops up.

Hmmm. Guess I need to just make some phone calls and see what's what. Perhaps some of the obsolete parts have been replaced by later and they just assume you're replacing the whole set?? lol I dunno.

Either way, I'm grateful and very interested in the rings you've found.

Thanks!

Frank

If your sure those pistons that you bought are correct then here are a bunch of rings ....I was concentrating on a completely different source out of the country that I have been able to trust in the past and have always been NOS and correct in every way. Anyway if you have not already seen them.. ebay has a bunch when you are confident in the part number.......

I tried calling several places but it seems all are closed on Saturday.

Thanks again!

While I'm tracking down my parts (I think I'm just going to go with the place dorT500 suggested and get piston kits complete, so I know what I have)...............

Some questions.

Being out of 2 cycles as long as I have, some things have changed. Specifically fuel. 10% (max) ethanol is all that's available to me here.

Also oil has changed quite a bit over the years. Once upon a time, we all ran merc outboard oil as it was consistent batch to batch. I see that their formulation has changed and don't know about their consistency.

What 2 cycle oil are you good folks running? Any specific suggestions would be appreciated.

Basically any product specific suggestions?

I saw in a post on another board about swapping the steering bearings out for a better style, anyone here have any info on this?

AND

A confession. lol

Over the course of the last couple days, I've found yet another Suzuki of the vintage. First off, it's my favorite styling. It's a 1968 T500. It's in perfect working order, was "rider restored" by a dealer in either Jacksonville FL, or very near there. It's a 2 owner and has been ridden from day one. It's current owners bought it from the original owner in Tampa FL and brought it to Conyers, GA. There it was ridden for just over a year.

The couple had bought it for their Son, who will be old enough to start riding in 2 months. After riding it a year, both the Mother and Father have decided that this is NOT the bike for their Son to learn on. lol

They are coming Wednesday to check out a lil CL100 I have that's really just been neglected. It's good runner, but cooling fins are nicked here and there, it has the wrong tank (rebel tank), wrong seat (S&S stepper for a sportster), 80s dirt bike front wheel and unknown plastic fenders. I was really holding on to it as a parts bike for my own CL100 and CB100 (which are still in winter storage in Zainsville OH).

They know the bike is a mutt and that it's an ugly one to boot. The Mother's comment was "sounds perfect!". They've only seen pictures of it, and my description to date, but they seem serious about making the trade.

They've got a box full of every record on the T500, from purchase to now. From the original owner to them, it's always been Suzuki serviced. I'm hoping to dig through the paperwork and find that a couple reliability mods have already been done.

Here's the kicker. A close friend of mine was the original owner and I know up to his passing (almost 2 yrs ago now), it was meticulously maintained. He had it "rider restored" in the Fall of 2008. (Rider restored, meaning it looks perfectly original, but they didn't go for a full on trailer queen restore......... which I wonder why people do with these bikes).

The confession? lol well........... I wasn't going to purchase another bike after the T250J, until I could find my Sister a Yamaha 200 Electric to replace hers with. Well, if the trade goes through, I wouldn't have "purchased" another bike! lol

I bought the cl100 mutt from Goodwill a couple years ago for the grand sum of $25. I'd have to total the book on it to be exact, but I've got around $75 in it, total. I've been using it as a trail rider, and nothing more.

So $75 for the T500 is great and I will then "have" to have a new trail bike. Very Happy

Time to grab some of the mutts from storage and start selling! lol Seems several people were interested in the mutt cl100 and just assumed it was a prized possession or something.

LOL the addiction grows,
Frank

As a famous quote went..."I know not what course others may take but as for me".....I walk in or call a Suzuki Dealership first before going anywhere else. All Suzuki dealerships will have an annual paperback Suzuki parts book(aside from what is in their own computer system) that is handy in looking up old parts and the numbers that have been superseded. There is even a chance, however slight, that they may have what a person wants sitting on an old shelf collecting dust. They are also sometimes cheaper than what you may see on ebay. Tax yes but no cost for ordering and shipping...at least at the one I use.

If it were me and this was my bike, I would also have this list in my pocket for the dealer and then if needed in front of me for ebay or companies that actually warehouse parts and just don't go on a hit or miss search for them after you order them. Actually I am more concerned about the pistons(numbers jive?) you bought from somebody than the rings. Good Luck

0.5 Pistons

2 X # 12103-18810-050

or 2 x # 12110-18750

or 2 x # 12110-18402-050

Ring set

2 x # 12140-18720 (original part number)

There's a dealership in Rome, GA (bout an hour and a half drive) that I'm going to check with Monday or Tuesday (depending on work load). They'll probably either have, or be able to get what I need. If not, I'll be using the link you provided earlier to get compete piston sets (with rings).

Then NOS piston boxes I bought are correct, but who can say the pistons in them are. lol I'll add them to the collection and do a full mic comparison to the new ones (ring lands and all). If they are in fact right, I'll label them such and put them on the shelf for the next time I might need some for a future bike. I knew the potential when purchasing them, but for $2, if they don't match up, they'll look good on the shelf. lol

I actually had a set of .5 rings given to me today and they do fit the bore and pistons properly, but I'm a little ticky I guess. They have some light rust and it's just not worth it to me. They would clean up and be fine, but why.

As to our local Suzuki dealer............ as of today, they are no more, and I couldn't be happier about it. Now maybe the GOOD shop in town will take on Suzuki as well. The "bad" Suzuki place has been busted for stolen bikes, drugs and a few other issues that I just don't support. More over, they've been known to clean up used parts, put them back in the new boxes and sell them as such. I bought a head for an 83 GSX400FW from them a few years back and found it to be used and beyond repair. I found out from the police (when the came and took the head) that it was evidence. They had a bike that was stolen from another dealer while the customer was awaiting a rebuild, and the police determined that the junk head I had bought was from that bike.

Thanks again for all the help!

Thanks all!

New piston kits on the way, along with:
Complete gasket kit
Pins and keepers
Big and little end bearings

Further questions:

I'm about to buy a service manual. Does the Suzuki Service Manual cover engine internal, or is this a separate book?

I'm looking at these (does the non OEM cover more or perhaps better?)

Also planning to get the parts manual to make things easier

Thought I'd give a minor update.

Couldn't decide on a manual, so have 3 different ones coming. Laughing
Got a parts manual coming too (quite helpful in the long run).

Hope to get the crank sent off this week or next, depending on the rebuilder's schedule.

Fired the 350 engine again today and checked it over. All's well, wow Surprised
Was either gonna sell it or use it on a "go cart", but have decided to wait until the T250's done in case I need some donors from it.

Trying to buy an extra set of carbs, for safety's sake, as well as another set of forks that are guaranteed non-pitted.

Will need some rear shocks. The left one is salvageable, but will need some hefty cosmetic work. The right one is toast. I've found some that look great cosmetically, but if there's either new available or a newer model direct swap, I'd rather go that way.

Before I get too much further into the purchases, any VJMOG members have any spares for sell for these critters?

Thanks,
Frank

lol doubt it would, but we might be able to make a swap just the same. I have a Virago 920 (shaft drvie, so should be some simple fab work), that I'm swapping FROM monoshock. I'm swapping the engine to an 84 Virago 1000 frame with dual shocks and a more "cruiser" (ish) look and feel.

Might be willing to trade some this and that for other projects and let ya have a complete frame / swingarm for graft work to get you to monoshock.
