My CB350 does smoke and it is a four stroke. That is because of the lousy unleaded gas we get these days caused my valves to go bad. Because of this it has been retired from daily rider service.

It's not the lousy gas that caused your bike to smoke. If the gas affects the valves, it will affect the valve seat and cause a compression loss but it has nothing to do with the valve seal.

I've got a '68 CL350 with several thousand miles on it over the past couple of years and it runs great.

It actually has compression problems too. I put a lot of miles on CB350 last year the total was over 8,000 miles when I parked it. Now I got the engine out on the stand and it is being rebuilt.

Choko, I need to put a new head gasket on a CL350 with 10,000 miles. What else should I do while I am in there?? Thinking ...do a valve check with gas in the chamber and see if any leakage happens around valve seat. Heck, maybe lap the valves for the heck of it. How about just new rings. Then should I put a new base gasket on too. This is the original owner and he wants it right for another 10,000 miles. Thanks Bud.

Rather than use gas to check the valve seal, use some acetone. Acetone is much less vicous than gas and will seep out and show a problem where gas will not. If you take apart the valve to lap it then I would replace the valve seals as well.

On the 350 you might check the seal behind the iginition advance unit. They leak sometimes and the oil seep out of the points cover and will give the impression that there is a head gasket problem.

Good stuff. That is the kind of stuff I need to know. Thanks MNellis. Valve seals might be a good idea. I have 175 and 185 psi on cylinders so.. Smile ....I was thinking of no new rings or base gasket. In other words, don't disturb cylinders. Opinion?

If those are numbers include a warm engine with Wide Open Throttle (WOT) then I wouldn't even mess with the valves other than making sure they are adjusted correctly. What are the symptoms that say you need to change the head gasket?

It is leaking badly and running somewhat poorly. Erratic, revs stay high sometimes, oil is burning so it is smoking, seems to run hot. I know, I really like the compression. I did the carbs well so pretty sure they are all right. I am hoping just replacing the head gasket will make it run perfect. I am starting to cross my fingers because that is a lot of work and then if it doesn't fix it and I have to go back in that would stink. I will keep you informed as I will be tearing it down this week sometime. Awesome to have a sounding board. Thanks.

I ask because with those compression numbers I'm surprised it's using any oil unless you've got a stuck oil control ring.

Have you tried taking a torque wrench to the head bolts to verify everything is snug? Also, there is a small bold on each side of the head just behind the spark plug cap. It's a 10mm socket (6mm bolt I think). Those come loose and will weep some oil. In the past I've had some luck just torquing those.

Also, as I mentioned, pull the point cover and make sure it's dry and no oil leaking out of there.

So I decided I didn't want to have to drive all the way to SD just to look at that T500. Instead, I got a local 75 Yamaha RD350. Twisted Evil

Good job. Very Happy I recently just picked up an RD400 myself.
