OK, so I finally cleared some room in my basement and got the bike inside before the impending snowstorm. Before doing so, I wanted to drain the tank. The CB550 is new to me, and I discovered that, unlike the petcock on my 350, there's no debris cup to remove and make draining easier. The guy I bought it from was nice enough to fill the tank before dropping it off, so I knew this would take a while through the fuel line hosebarbs. I decided to remove the tank and set it aside to drain, while I muscled the bike down into my dungeon. It was then that I realized the two tank lobes are not connected with a length of tubing, nor are there even hosebarbs to connect them to one another. Can anyone tell me how this is possible? While draining, I had to tip the tank to get all the fuel to the side with the petcock.

Being quite the noob myself, not sure if I'm any help but about an hour ago I too pulled and drained the tank on my '72CB 500, which does have a debris cup. I believe the two separate lines simply feed different carb combos, one goes to the left two cars, the other to the right two. I gave up letting mine drain through the outlets. Instead took it outside and dumped it out through the fill cap, (into a tank, via a funnel) much quicker! I then took the filter off the petlock debris cup and cleaned it. _________________ recently acquired '72 CB500K Jeff

Thanks, but what I really want to know is how fuel is pulled from the half of the tank opposite the petcock. On the 350, the two tank halves that hang on either side of the frame are connected together with a short peice of tubing (#36 in the illustration) to balance out both sides, and let them drain and fill evenly.
From what I can see on the 550, there is no means of connecting the two tank halves to balance them out.

The tunnel isn't as deep at the rear as on the 350. But yes, there will be some unusable fuel. If you run it dry on reserve, stop and lean the bike way over, and you might get another 10 miles down the road. LOL
