Instant messaging would be a nice luxury but not a necessity. We just use PM's and get back with each other that way. Yes, IM would be nice because you can elaborate a bit more and type what you are thinking at the moment. But...at the expense of hardware, software, memory capacity it would not disrupt the site without it. Not many used it. I tried to get people in the chat room but nobody wanted to go in there with me. I think they thought I might molest them. At least that is the feeling I got. Anyway, my 2 cents.
Steve,
This is not a resource issue. The server can easily handle it. This is a Firefox issue and it’s not even a problem. It’s a "feature". Opera has a similar sort of thing going on. It’s sort of like buying a car that has a bump detector built into the dash that flashes red every time you hit a bump in the road even though it serves absolutely no purpose and then asking for the city to repave the roads because that annoying red light on your dash keeps lighting up. Additionally having IM’s on site has about as much effect on someone’s Internet usage as a fart in a wind storm.
Regardless, I’d rather not deal with it. I suspect IM's are just too advanced of a feature for this particular site.

Kind of seems that way. I try to IM but not many come with me. Ride on Brother! _________________ You only go around once in life, but if you do it right, once is enough!

That is a very good analogy, however, I never asked or even gave a hint for "the city to repave the roads". I just posted an observation for a possible fix on my end. Late member 'Blue' and I used IM all the time and he was a real self-admitted greenhorn at computers and was not intimidated about using the advanced feature. _________________ _________________________________

Don’t take it personal, it wasn’t intended that way. I was just trying to express a technical issue in the most non technical way possible.
To tell you the truth the only way I know to get rid of that annoying behavior in Firefox is to hide tabs and then remove the stop button from the toolbar or at least change its appearance from icons to text which is at least less annoying than that red flashing X.
Or you can set your toolbar to auto hide by hitting F11 on the keyboard and then the toolbar will only appear when you mouse over it. If I am not mistaken there is an auto hide extension that you can download that makes this behavior permanent.
