On Wednesday afternoon the main hard disk in the server crashed. (It had been acting up all day.) I sent a replacement drive out FedEx to the datacenter on Thursday morning. It arrived in Dallas at around 10:00 AM this morning and the server was accessible again at around noon. I set it up as a web server and restored the backups after work. Information has been restored as of 12:00 midnight (GMT) on the night before the drive started flaking out.
I still have some loose ends I still need to tie up on the server end of things that could result in temporary service outages from time to time. (Unknown I’m a pessimist LOL) I just figured you guys would appreciate me lighting the sites back off ASAP rather than be a nit about every last detail.
Thanks,
Dave. _________________ 78 Honda GL1000

Thanks, Dave. For a while, I thought that I had been ousted from another forum It's happened before.

Hi Dave,
The outage made me realize how much I have come to enjoy this forum as I work towards enhancing my knowledge about vintage japanese bikes. It also made me realize that I need to thank you for all of the work you put into maintaining this site. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
All the best,

I was going through withdrawal, cold sweats, can't sleep, irritated with my sweety. You got it back up just in the nick of time. _________________ Flyboy

Looks like Dave Krager (CA) is getting his server back in order. This was a good lesson for all of us. We realized how much we enjoy this site. Thanks for everyones patience. Dave hosts this forum from his home out of the goodness of his heart and the love of motorcycles. Let's just keep twistin' the throttle. Thanks again everyone! Hi Steve, Slight correction, we are actually on about $5,000.00 enterprise class server housed in a state of the art datacenter right smack dab on one of the central hubs of the Internet located in Dallas Texas. (Go Cowboys. LOL) I do everything remotely from my home in San Diego. (Go Chargers. LOL)
That’s why if a part breaks. I have to drop ship spares to the datacenter. It's what is known as co-location and it’s how virtually every hosting company houses their servers. Those hosting companies then rent out space on the server and make their money that way. The same goes for most dedicated servers. The hosting company just buys the server and colocates it. That’s why dedicated servers are so expensive. You are not only paying the monthly fees to keep it going, you are paying against the original purchase price of the server at a huge markup.
I just eliminate the middle man and act as my own hosting company. By doing so I only have to pay for electricity, a network connection and rack space in the datacenter. The server has already paid for itself in saved rental costs.
It’s a little more work on my part but the same server would cost about $750.00 per month if I were to rent it. By owning it and colocating like I do. I am able to do exactly the same thing for about $90.00 per month.
Not a bad deal if you ask me. And well worth the delay if I have to FedEx out a replacement part.
Cheers,
