So I picked up a '76 gt500 from a guy that had it laying around outside his barn. It cost me a whopping....case of coors lights lol. It hasn't been registered (or ran I'm guessing) since 1986. There is 5500 kms on the motor. The motor appears in really good condition..no rust or anything like that but the rest of the bike is pretty bad as I'm sure you can imagine. I have it all stripped down right now..motor is strapped onto a skid and ready to try to get it running. The carbs were taken apart and cleaned, new gaskets n all that and they were in pretty good shape. Now I have NO idea about these bikes, or any 2-strokes for that matter. So if you guys could point me in the right direction to get this motor running I would very much appreciate it. The gas tank is garbage so how do I set up a fuel source? Oil injection tank is good. How do I set up the battery to it...these are the types of things I need to know! I ride a gixxer 1k and have done work on it like new clutch, fork seals, etc..so I have tools, and am somewhat mechanical. This will be a ground up restoration so if you guys can help me out here I will certainly be posting pictures of my progress throughout the project.

Thanks!! Very Happy

p.s. the pic is before I stripped it down..gives you an idea of the condition lol

welcome..i personally get the engine running before teardown of the bike..
it makes it much easier to run..lol..as you need the pipes on it..
too much temp rigging for me to make it run on a skid..
but if you insist..you will need to mount pipes ,carbs and at least temp wire the ignition..coils etc
as well as come up w some containers for fuel for each cyl ( small squeeze bottles will work )

I had different plans for the bike and that's why I took the motor out before running it...change my mind so she's out for now. I have the wire harness still here intact it looks in pretty good shape. This maybe a stupid question but I really have no idea how to set up the temp electronics on this thing to get it running so if you don't mind and have the time I am going to need baby steps here! haha

Just so you know my plans here, once this motor runs and I see if it needs any work to it (unlikely since it only has over 5000kms), I am going to paint the engine with high temp black paint. Polish or chrome the side covers and bolts, and polish the fins, replace spark plus caps, etc. The frame is ready to be sanded and I have my paint guns. The frame is going to be a dark candy red, and I'm going with a cafe style.

thanks for your reply

the gt series should all be point ignition..
i guess you could rehook the harness to the engine cause you need the battery to power the iggy..
or find a schematic and just wire the ignition up..
but you will need to mount the pipes to run it..
as for fuel to the carbs id look for some condiment squeeze bottles..

thanks that link will be useful Very Happy Tonight I hooked up the oil tank and a makeshift gas tank. Set up all the wires until I got to the point where I was getting spark. I didn't have a battery hooked up. I filled the oil tank and connected the banjo bolt but no oil would flow through the hose? If I loosen the banjo bolt oil will come down so I know it's not a clog in the tank. Maybe I'm missing something but what's my next step here? Sorry I know these are probably bigtime noob questions...so no flaming lol Laughing

the reason I have it out of the frame is because I had the bike given to me...so I originally just wanted the frame and wheels etc because I was going to put a different motor in it and chop it up. And a friend was going to take the gt motor. then I realized I was being an idiot and not to give that motor away and just restore it all....so unfortunately I didn't label a damn thing as it was coming apart. I'll post pics tommorow. thanks again.

remember..its an oil pump...if you are kicking it you will get very little flow out of the pump into the injector lines
as they need very little oil at kicking rpm..

heres some pics I got my brother in law to take them because it is in his garage right now so he only took these three I didn't specify thatI wanted pics of the whole set-up on the skid...hopefully you guys can make out the pics and give me a hand..I'm away for business the next three days so if these aren't good enough I'll grab some more on friday! The oil tank is strapped to a post that I drilled onto the skid, it's above the level of the oil pump. The gas tank is a plastic container (not in pics) and is very tight around the fuel line. Like I said there was a healthy spark when i kicked the motor over so the coils n everything must be good. It's not hooked up to a battery. There is no oil going into the pump when I kick it over..if I loosen the banjo bolt oil comes out so she's not clogged. Thanks for the help folks!! Smile

I know it sucks having to get it running on the skid but there is only 5000kms so i just want to hear how she sounds...once it runs I'll adjust the jets, put new piston rings, gasket, etc.
