Im replacing leaky orings on this topend, figured Id forget oil jet orings, so I left them inplace through entire stripping and cleaning, covering them with tape leaving the old Orings as a reminder, paint done today, im blowing off motor with air Id just removed rags from under pistons to keep any krud out and Ill be a SOB if the Oring didnt fly up in the air and straight into the crankcase! SOOO tommorrow Im gonna wrig a small fuel line type hose to the shop vac and try to suck it out. Unless someone has a rubber magnet. ARGGHH.

that said what am i looking foward to on setting this crank, the cam n separate sprocket make it look tricky to me. Ive read up on this with the availble google info but its sketchy.

Too bad about your o ring. You and I have a lot in common when it comes to bad luck. Mad I always figure, if it can happen, it will happen to ME!
I don't think you will have much problem timing the engine. Leave the valve adjusters loose to take some pressure off the cam and it should line right up.

Sucks about the oring Shocked Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

On the topic of leaks…I used to fix up a lot of early 80’s 650 Hondas and Yamaha’s for friends.
A very common problem they had were leaky heads…I found that on many bikes they never cleaned the bottom of the threaded hole in production…if you get a small mag light to look down in you can see aluminum thread chips in the hole…take a small pic and air hose and clean all threaded holes out before rebuilding.
If you don’t what can happen, you put the bolt in torque it down and it still leaks…the bolt is bottoming on the tread chips, not the head.
While you have it apart it is worth looking at each hole just to make sure.
Lou

one more question , the book doesnt quit show for sure but It looks as though top end is removed with the motor in the frame, if so is it easier to put her in now or go ahead with get her done then install?

Either way is OK. The engine will be lighter and easier to handle without the top end on, but I like to assemble the engine completely out of the frame. It makes it easier to see my mistakes. Laughing

I had to say that I really liked the "a small fuel line type hose to the shop vac and try to suck it out." idea. I'll keep that little trick in my magic tool box. Thanks. Wink

Jeep, the 374-004 are superceded by the 374-000. You'll need 4 sets of 374-000 if the cylinders are not scored or rusted. A simple hone job to break the glaze and stick it together.
By the way, don't tell anyone (I'll probably get flamed for this) but I re-used my rings on my 750a after I honed the cylinders.
