I have several. If my questions seem stupid, so sorry.

1 Will the ignition still work without the battery?

2 I'm having trouble removing the side covers. I was able to free the bottom of the cover but the top area is really tight and I'm afraid I'm going to break the cover. The cover on the left side has the exhaust covering the bottom area. Just pull straight out?

3 Suggestions on a good way to remove rust from the fuel tank. Or a good rust removal product?

I have a '71 CB and am not a pro but I can tell you what I know about mine:

I don't think you're gonna get anywhere without a battery.

If your side covers are like mine, the tops are plastic tabs that slide into rubber grommets. If it's been awhile since the covers were off, the rubber is very dry and the plastic tabs may be stuck to it. Try shooting a little wd40 or spray lithium between the tabs and the rubber and ease it back and forth carefully and it should begin to loosen up. Careful is the word. Those tabs will break.

Cleaning the tank. Wow. Do a search and you'll find several jillion opinions. Personally I have cleaned several tanks using Behr Concrete Etcher from Home Depot. I believe it's phosphoric acid. I remove the tank and petcock, and put a chain, or nuts and bolts into the tank and rattle it around to loosen and remove any big chunks of rust. Then I wrap the tank with plastic and tape to protect the paint. Then I dilute the acid by half and add it to the tank. Watch it carefully while the rust bubbles away, then drain. Flush with water. Then fill with water and baking soda to neutralize any remaining acid. Then flush again and blow dry with compressed air. I personally have never coated the inside of the tank with anything other that a shot of wd40 until I'm ready to fill it with fuel. Add some inline filters to catch any residual crud.

I'm sure there are opinions that differ from this method but it has worked for me.

Good luck!

1- Nope

2 - Remove exhaust - try to get your fingers in behind the cover and push the tabs out rather than pull the cover off. They break real easy, then you're dead. Squirt some WD-40 around first to help.

3 - Lots of ways, choose the one that sounds best to you. I use MSR.

Bill already said it but, pull the exhaust system off. it is very easy to do. Then you can pull that pesky side cover off no problem and get to that air filter that has probably never been changed.

Believe it or not, vinegar works well as a rust remover. I watched as my buddy did a GL1200 Gold Wing gas tank that turned from pure rust to 95% spotless on the 1st wash.

I can confirm that. Works ok, and you can make some pickles at the same time...........

Excellent suggestions, thanks. I'll try the WD40 or I might soak the side cover grommets with STP Son of a Gun.

Never thought of vinegar as a rust remover. That would be easy and cheap. I was considering a rust remover product from Autozone.

This is just starting to get fun. The carbs are gummed up big time. So bad the throttle won't turn.

Find someone with an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your carbs for you.
Or soak them in soap and warm water yourself.
The "Awesome" will break that mung up and free up the throttle plates.

Vinegar! That's a new one on me as well. Learn something every day. I'll have to try it on my current project (1968 wards Riverside Mojave). If it truly does work it would certainly be more environmentally friendly (easier to dispose of) and less harmfull to paint, skin, etc. that phosphoric acid!

Just remember you will need to neutralize the acid (vinegar) when you are done. I've heard a few good suggestions (water & baking soda, lemon juice, etc).

Thanks again, is that a 73 model in the picture? Someone repainted the tank and side covers on the one I'm fooling with. I can't understand why. I may have to post a photo. I think the person must have been drunk and smoking crack at the same time when the pattern was chosen.

I don't think lemon juice will neutralize acid, lemon juice is acidic. Baking soda in water, then a water flush would be better I think? I think the the cook said vinegar or lemon to eat the rust. I might be wrong?

GOT THE SIDE COVERS OFF IN ONE PIECE!!! Very Happy STP Son of a Gun helped a lot. Now the air filter covers. Do they just pull off? The only thing I see that appears to be holding it is a metal tab at the top middle area. Looking at an exploded view from Midwest Action Cycle really doesn't show me how it is held in place.

Never mind! Got the covers off. Didn't realize the bottom grommet holder was attached to the long rod that went through to the other side.

Did your air filters look like these?

They are the original 71 air filters that came with the bike when it was new.

Yes, I believe they are exactly like that. I'm going to very carefully try to clean them a little with reverse air flow.
