The X in this situation is at the end of the model designation (e.g. GS650GX.) This "X" indicates the '81 production run. It is the basic shafty model, as Macattack said.
I took a look at it, and decided to buy it. It appears to be a sound machine. There is no topend noise, or vibrations at 5000 rpm that they say is a sign of a bad crankshaft. The charging system check is putting out upwards of 12 volts at 4000 rpm. I plan on changing the stator and regulator/rectitfier with an electro sport replacement system they say solves the known problem with these.
There is a carburator issue (I hope) that I'm working on.
The previous owner messed with the carburators, and added pod filters. It runs flat at about 4000 rpm, and unless you ease into it after shifting it runs flat. I assume this is due to an over lean mixture resulting from the pods (hopefully.) I went about gathering the original airbox and new Uni filter, before realising I don't have the frame piece the filter mounts to. Now I can't find that piece, after searching a salvage yard and ebay. Is there a way to tune the carbs for the pods, or should I try ordering an OEM box with all the pieces, if it's even available.

The carb specs are:

Mikuni BS32SS

I.D.- 34200

BORE- 32MM

MAIN JET- #110

PILOT JET- #42.5

STARTER JET- #45

GS650GX early two valve per cylinder Katana 650.
In this instance I think the X after model means its a limited production?
GS650G = standard,
GS650GL = 'custom'
X in prefix means its 4 valves/cyl (GSX)
G = shaft drive
L = lowslinger (lowrider, Japanese translation?)
The odd model in US market is GS1100/1150. Everywhere else in the world its a GSX1100/1150.
I will have to find my notebooks for other 'codes'

I liked them, really reliable motor.
Only problems we had 'back in the day' were regulator/rectifiers shorting out and then battery current burning out stator windings

i purchased my gs650g for a mere $500.00. it ran and thats all i could ask for at that price. the secong gear shift fork was bent and all gaskets were shitty.it is missing the rear seat cowl. anywho the 650g is known for beaing a heavy slob get the sawzall out if you plan on converting to a chain motor but all gs motors will fit with a little cutting here and there. i have lots of parts for the 1981 gs650g if interested. complete motor forks wheels gauges exhaust etc.. let me know if you need anything. glad to help
