The problem was the rectangular balancer weights on the balancershaft that "knocked" the oil litteraly to foam, which is not well known for its lubricating abilities Rolling Eyes

There were lots of little niggles like oil leaks and oil filters but the big two were the oil frothing which seized cams and the balancer shaft which stretched chains and then the weights hit each other and demolished the engine. The first problem was fixed by fitting the sump extension and oil cooler and the second by fitting the balance chain adjuster kit. By 74 with these and literally 100's of small mods re oil leaks they were a great bike but it was too late, the reputation was shot. I had two back in the 70's and have one now. BUT they are a bike for the knowlegable enthusiast. If you know how to look after it you will never part with it. If you dont then dont touch it.

ThumperGuy, Excellent!!!! Very well spoken and researched. That is the kind of specific information that is needed for keeping a vintage Yamaha on the road. I have so many bikes, I can't remember all fixes so I will "stay away". Thanks.

This is a good Topic to find out stuff about the TX. My dad just got a 73 TX750 from my cusin. The bike looks great and my cusin drove it alot intill the engine broke down and he think it was the cams. This does sound right after reading this Thread.
I read that you guys, that have these bikes and has them running, have done many mods. Is there any list of all the mods that should be done? How is the sump extension and Balancer chain conversion done and is there a specifict oilcooler that should be baught and installed? I see Concours and ThumperGuy lists these as the main mods. Is there a good place to get parts for this bike?
The engine is all in pieces, because my cusin tore it apart and never did anything more too it. I think most of the parts are there.
Any help would be great. It is a very nice bike and it would be great to have a running one!!!

Theres a great website that has lots of info on the TX750's: http://www.tobyfolwick.com/tx750/
Not sure how long it will be there though as the site owners says he has some health issues. If you look there is a whole section on how to upgrade the balancer. (Be warned its not a particularly easy task) For bits I have just set up searches for TX750 on eBay and the likes and bits come through from time to time. I bought a later XJ900 (I think) oil cooler for mine but then found an original. Good luck.

I am going to have to go to it. Only because I have a TX750 in my salvage yard and it was one of the bikes that I was thinking about attempting "to save" instead of part out. Honestly I have been wanting a lot of information about these bikes because of their performance, etc.
