Don't do this, you will ruin the tank. Sometimes they bloat, other times they split at the seams...never heard a happy ending with this procedure.

You definitely need seals. My RD400 was so bad it took forever to start and I had a 1/2 inch of burnt tranny oil and gas sitting in the crankcase.

HVC cycle should have the seals you need.

When I tore down my RD motors, I took a folded up rag and jammed it in between the primary drive gear and clutch. A penny works as well. Make sure you use a breaker bar when you do this...makes things ...

You may want to spray some penetrating fluid down the cylinder with low compression and kick it over a few times as it may be stuck rings, especially if it's been sitting.

Either your rings are sticking in the left cylinder, it needs new rings or an oversize+rebore.

Did you store the bike properly?
Have you tried starting it with the choke left on?
New spark plugs?
Sure all connections are tight?
Check if you have spark?
Check that points are clean with g ...
