My 1974 GT250 imploded: one piston is gouged with metal, crankshaft is broken, odd bits of metal everywhere on the left side. Mechanic says "Look for an engine/trans."

The shaft in question is #13 in the drawing. I've mounted the casing making sure that 13 pressed through the assembly at 19-20-21. I don't ... |

The carbs are clean and rebuilt professionally.
New plugs made a huge difference, so I'm leaning toward things are running too rich. |

I replaced both front and rear sprockets--well worn--as I added a new chain. All went well, I thought.

I've played with the top screw/idle adjustment, opening them up a quarter turn. It does give a faster idle, but the engine still dies at idle.
Plugs are oily/black.
So I'm guessing a mixture problem ... |

And I'm using a synthetic oil, and it's not blowing much smoke. Unlike its owner.
